Position Summary
A Postdoctoral Fellow position is immediately available in the laboratory of Dr. Rama Natarajan, Professor and Chair, Department of Diabetes Complications, at the Diabetes and Metabolism Research Institute within Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope, California. The Natarajan laboratory is well recognized for research related to the molecular mechanisms associated with accelerated complications of diabetes, with specific emphasis on epigenetics and non-coding RNAs. The lab applies state-of-the-art transcriptomic (RNA-sequencing), and epigenomic profiling (DNA methylation, histone modifications, 3D chromatin), single cell sequencing, bioinformatics, molecular and cellular biology approaches in diabetes and obesity research, with a goal to unravel mechanisms underlying the accelerated rates of debilitating vascular complications in people with diabetes. Furthermore, we are exploring the epigenetic mechanisms associated with metabolic memory, a phenomenon in which prior episodes of hyperglycemia can lead to persistent development of complications despite subsequent glycemic control. We also test the translational potential of the new factors identified in our research by using novel targeting modalities in vivo. Together we adopt a unique comprehensive molecular-multi-Omics-translational approach using cell and animal models of diabetes as well as samples from subjects with diabetes.

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow with strong interest in epigenomic and transcriptomic research related to inflammatory, vascular and renal complications of diabetic complications. The candidate should have good training and technical expertise in molecular and cell biology, genomic data analyses and bioinformatics. The candidate should be self-motivated, with a proven track record of publications and strong interest to pursue diabetic complications research. Experience with animal models is a plus. The major interests in our lab include: 1) Role of epigenetics and non-coding RNAs in monocyte-macrophage inflammatory phenotypes in type1 and type2 diabetes; 2) Role of key lncRNAs in diabetic kidney disease. Development of genetic mouse models using CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing; 3) Epigenomics and gene regulation in diabetes induced vascular dysfunction and hypertension.

Qualifications
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • PhD in Molecular, Cellular or Developmental Biology.
  • Proficiency with biochemical techniques, molecular biology skills and cell culture systems.
  • Experience with epigenetics research, analyses of high throughput sequencing data and bioinformatics analysis required.
  • Experience with in vivo animal model research is a plus, but not mandatory.
  • Highly motivated with strong interest in diabetes/metabolic disease research.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work effectively in a team.
