Responsibilities:

The University of Akron invites nominations and applications for the position of Director for the School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering (SPSPE), in the College of Engineering and Polymer Science (CEPS). This position is expected to start by July 2021. The successful candidate will be an expert in the field of polymers and/or soft matter; a visionary, with a strong technical and organizational vision for advancing the school; an outstanding manager and leader with administrative experience; an experienced fundraiser; and an outspoken and effective advocate for the school and the college, able to effectively promote SPSPE and CEPS interests at the university, state, and federal levels.

Required Qualifications:

PhD in Chemical Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemistry or Physics and five (5) years of relevant managerial and leadership experience in a technical organization, this may include academic, government laboratory or corporate R&D.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in obtaining research funding and contract administration.

Comments:

The SPSPE consists of two units (in four buildings), 25 research active faculty members, two Associate Directors responsible for assisting the Director with academic and research activities, 25 staff members and contract professionals and 225 graduate students. The school is organized for teaching and research at the graduate level, granting M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in either Polymer Science or Polymer Engineering. The organization includes complementary research centers and facilities with instrumentation and support staff, which generally provides a research focus for the faculty and graduate students. The program is the largest and broadest in the U.S., dating from 1909, and is recognized as being among the world's best.
