Position Summary

A Postdoctoral Fellow Position is available for an industrious individual to work on a project focused on advancing quantitative single molecule localization microscopy (qSMLM) to study alcohol use disorders. The Position will use advanced microscopy methods to assess how alcohol perturbs the dynamic organization of signaling domains that harbor opioid receptors: Ethanol and Naltrexone Have Distinct Effects on the Lateral Nano- organization of Mu and Kappa Opioid Receptors in the Plasma Membrane (ACS Chemical Neuroscience, 2019, Tobin et al.). Acute exposure to ethanol affects both the clustering and nano-organization of opioid receptors; such effects may be impeded by the drug naltrexone. This National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded Position will probe the nano-organization of kappa and mu opioid receptors in cultured cells and rat brains.

Key Responsibilities include:

The Position involves (but is not limited to) designing and executing studies that comprise the following activities: cell culture, plasmid transfection, antibody labeling and validation; immunostaining of cells and rat brain slices; qSMLM imaging (PALM and dSTORM); analysis of qSMLM data using established algorithms; development of new codes (MATLAB) to process qSMLM data.

The Position is expected to work independently, work collaboratively with other lab-members, and work productively with the Principle Investigator (Dr. Jovanovic-Talisman). A successful candidate will deftly balance these activities and meet NIH milestones.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

A Ph.D. degree in biomedical sciences, biophysics, chemical engineering or a related discipline is required with no more than 3 years of postdoctoral training
Experience in quantitative microscopy, cell biology, and MATLAB programing
Ability to carry out independent research and prepare manuscripts for publication.
Super-resolution microscopy experience is highly preferred.
