Vice Chair for Research

Department of Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology

New York Medical College, School of Medicine

Valhalla, New York

New York Medical College (NYMC or College) School of Medicine (SOM) and the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS) invite applications for a new position of Vice Chair for Research (VCR) of the Department of Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology providing leadership in basic and translational research to a faculty of distinguished academic scientists, educators and clinicians. The VCR will work collaboratively with the Chair, who is the academic leader of the department, as well as the Dean of the SOM and faculty of the NYMC community. The new Vice Chair for Research will also have the unique opportunity to establish and direct a new Center of Excellence in their area of expertise, to integrate investigators from the basic and clinical sections of the department and the College.

The College’s Basic Sciences Department is a home to approximately 120 full time and 70 part-time/voluntary basic science faculty members, in addition to research and support staff, graduate and medical students, and postdocs. Faculty research programs in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology span bacterial, viral, and parasite pathogenesis including tick-borne pathogens, vaccine and diagnostic development, toxicology, immunology, immunotherapeutics, systems biology /immunology and cancer. Departmental research support is provided by a variety of sources including the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Health, Department of Defense, New York State, private foundations and biomedical corporations. NYMC is currently expanding its virology faculty and research capability with additional faculty recruitment and capital facilities investments.

The VCR will enhance team science and educational initiatives that support the joint mission of NYMC and its academic health center partner. The VCR will provide outstanding leadership to the research programs within the Department of Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology, support the Department’s well-established basic, translational and clinical programs, and foster collaborative partnerships across the College. The VCR will work with the Chair to recruit top faculty to enhance departmental research capacity; develop and enhance educational programs for medical and graduate students, residents and fellows; expand research programs and resources; and pursue innovation and excellence in each of the core missions of the Department.

The VCR will have access to NYMC’s transformative biotechnology incubator, BioInc@NYMC, the only incubator of its kind in the region that is located on the NYMC campus. In addition, the College’s scientific core infrastructure includes a Core Histology Laboratory - providing routine histology, special staining, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, cryotomy services, and laser scanning microdissection; Flow Cytometry Laboratory - a 4,300 sq. ft. research facility located in the Brander Cancer Research Institute on campus; Confocal Microscopy core; the Genomics Core Laboratory - providing access to Illumina MiSeq apparatus and data analysis systems; and the Systems Biology Core Laboratory - combining the theoretical and experimental skills of core faculty to design, perform, understand and analyze a wide variety of pathophysiological and “omics” studies.

The VCR will have access to the clinical enterprise at the Westchester Medical Center (WMC), our primary clinical affiliate, which is accredited by the College of American Pathologists and functions as a reference laboratory for the State of New York. The Division operates specialized laboratories in Flow Cytometry, Transplant-Immunology, Special Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology-Serology, Cystic Fibrosis (which serves as the regional laboratory for diagnosis of cystic fibrosis and performs the largest number of these tests in the state), Microbiology-Parasitology-Mycology laboratory, and the General Core Laboratory, which combines the functions of STAT laboratory with that of regular Chemistry, Hematology and Clinical Microscopy laboratories that provide key services 24/7. The Pathology division has a modern state of the art histopathology lab providing routine histopathology, special stains, immunohistochemistry, frozen sections, cytology, electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, and molecular pathology services. Diagnostic consultations are provided by a group of skilled Pathologists, including subspecialty expertise in Oncologic Surgical Pathology, Pediatric Pathology, Cytopathology, Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology, Renal Pathology, Hematopathology, Neuropathology, Autopsy, GYN Pathology, Pulmonary Pathology, Breast Pathology, Cardiac Pathology, and Genitourinary Pathology. WMC’s Pathology Residency Program offers ACGME accredited training for 12 residents in either combined tract of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (APCP), or single tract of Anatomic Pathology (AP), or Clinical Pathology (CP).

Successful VCR candidates must be respected scientists or physician-scientists with excellent research and operational skills. Candidates with clinical qualifications would be a plus. Candidates must have demonstrated leadership ability, with evidence of progressive major roles/positions and proven success in operating an active extramurally funded research program that would complement existing areas of research, preferably within Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology and/or at an interdisciplinary interface. A strong commitment to education and research, with the ability to recruit top faculty members, is required. Candidates must be qualified for faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor and will be afforded a competitive salary and start up package based on experience.
