MAIN REPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES

The Internal Medicine Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible for leading an organization of global, regional, and country medical colleagues responsible for the generation and dissemination of data and for interactions with medical experts, patient advocates and advocacy organizations, regulatory and payer authorities, and other key external stakeholders. The CMO and his/her team support the appropriate use of Pfizer medicines and gather customer insights that inform Pfizer's medical, development, and commercial activities. The CMO is expected to build and maintain strong opinion leader relationships as appropriate and to be the Medical "face" of Pfizer for Internal Medicine.

The CMO is responsible for contributing to the productivity of Pfizer Biopharmaceuticals by enhancing medical leadership and professionalism, assuring clear prioritization, and effectively managing budgets and people within and across regions. This includes responsibility for managing talent in his/her organization in alignment across Medical Affairs at Pfizer, as well as ensuring that his/her organization adheres to the common guidance applicable across the Medical Affairs groups in Internal Medicine. The CMO is accountable for all Medical Plans and deliverables for Internal Medicine assets globally. The CMO additionally has line management of, and primary responsibility for, in-country Medical Directors globally.

The Internal Medicine CMO chairs the CMO forum and is responsible for ensuring consistent interpretation of policies and procedures across Internal Medicine, and development and enhancement of centralized tools and processes to maximize effectiveness of Medical Affairs activities across business units.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the global medical/scientific liaison with the Internal Medicine Research Unit Chief Scientific Officer, Global Product Development Chief Development Officer, and Interal Medicine Group President
  • Provide medical leadership both internally and externally to the Internal Medicine group and serve as the Medical Lead on the Internal Medicine Leadership Team
  • Enhance value by representing and interfacing with internal stakeholders to develop/endorse Internal Medicine strategies and plans and to ensure delivery of the medical components of those plans
  • Partner with the regional commercial Presidents and Commercial Development/Global Marketing leaders as the single point of contact & accountability to ensure medical and commercial alignment on key strategies, deliverables & communication globally
  • Represent Medical Affairs function in appropriate governance committees, including but not limited to, disease area Technical Review Committee, Business Unit Benefit Risk Committee, Labeling Executive.
  • Serve as a standing member of the Internal Medicine Global CMO Forum and provide input into issues and decisions to improve medical affairs functions and processes that affect all groups (i.e., Internal Medicine, Rare Disease, Inflammation & Immunology, Oncology, and Vaccines) within Pfizer Biopharmaceuticals
  • Serve as an Externally Facing Expert: Represent Pfizer externally as appropriate
  • Manage talent within the team(s), including talent and succession planning with a strong emphasis on colleague mentoring and development
  • Manage Internal Medicine Global Medical Leads and Regional Medical VPs, assuring clear roles, responsibilities and accountabilities between global, regional, and country colleagues
  • Provide medical oversight of brands within the therapeutic area group at an above brand level, addressing key strategic decisions and critical issues, as appropriate
  • Assure clear prioritization of medical work and appropriate and flexible resourcing across global, regional and country medicine teams within the therapeutic area to assure that high priority medical work is accomplished with excellent quality and in a timely manner.

REQUIRED SKILL SET
  • MD degree is required; an MD degree with relevant specialist or Pharma clinical experience and appropriate board certification or comparable professional recognition and clinical experience is preferred
  • Strong experience (10-15 years) in pharmaceutical medicine, including medical affairs, regulatory interactions and management experience; a minimum of 10 years of medical affairs experience required
  • Experience in managing medical brand teams supporting assets at varied stages of development and lifecycle
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working in a cross-functional business environment
  • Proven leadership skills in managing people and projects both directly and via a matrixed or indirect team
  • Strong interpersonal skills to quickly build rapport and credibility with Pfizer leaders and key external stakeholders
  • Ability to partner cross culturally/regionally
  • Effective talent management
  • Effective English verbal and written communication with flexibility to be clear, consistent, compliant and appropriate for a variety of settings including scientific/technical, promotional, patient/consumer, regulatory, and media
  • In depth understanding of the business of pharmaceutical medicine including clinical trial design and data interpretation, drug development, regulatory and promotional rules/guidance, legal and compliance, issue management and business development opportunity evaluations
  • Commitment to the principles of medical professionalism
