Role Summary

We are looking for a Computational Biologist specializing in the analysis of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data to help build and refine data processing pipelines to support work on gene therapies and other oligonucleotide-based modalities. The role will collaborate with scientists at multiple Pfizer research sites and report into Pfizer's Simulation and Modeling Sciences (SMS) team. The qualified candidate will be responsible for applying NGS analytical methods in the assessment of product quality, detection of impurities, and/or structural characterization. The role will require excellent communication skills to enable work with a multi-disciplinary team performing analysis in support of clinical biotherapeutic, vaccine, and gene therapy projects. The successful candidate will demonstrate an enthusiasm to work, collaborate, and communicate with both computational and experimental scientists.

Role Responsibilities
  • Develop, apply, enhance, and maintain current and new computational pipelines for multi-omics high-throughput datasets including DNA, RNA, and single-cell sequencing data.
  • Develop, troubleshoot, and utilize bioinformatics to support process and formulation development of gene medicines, which includes the analysis of viral vectors and plasmids, as well as monitoring of residual impurities.
  • Design, guide, and conduct statistically rigorous data analyses to support research projects and discover biological insights.
  • Develop and apply computational tools for data sharing and visualization.
  • Document analytical results in regulated systems and technical reports.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging methods in computational biology and applications for novel omics technologies.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in computational biology, biostatistics, computer science, or a related technical field with 0-5 years of industrial experience in the analysis of NGS and other omics datasets.
  • Strong quantitative reasoning and statistical analysis skills with ability to apply them to relevant scientific projects and interpret results.
  • Strong computational and programming skills in Python, R, or equivalent applications.
  • Experience with a cloud-based computational environment such as a SLURM based cluster.
  • Have a strong attention to detail, organizational skills, the ability to multitask, and effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to collaborate with computational and experimental scientists located at the multiple sites.
  • Well-cited journal publications and presentations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong background in 'omics pipeline development using Workflow Description Language (WDL) or other workflow development languages.
  • Demonstrated experience applying computational and statistical approaches to deliver analysis ready data (e.g. multivariate and machine learning approaches).
  • Deep understanding of the statistical methods commonly used in omics analyses.
  • Experience in analysis of gene therapies, viral vectors (e.g., adeno-associated virus), plasmids, large molecules, and vaccines.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interface with computational biologists to communicate and discuss results.
  • Exceptional documentation skills.
  • Self-motivated and highly effective in a team-based environment.
