Position Summary:
The Licensed Vocational Nurse II (LVN) is a licensed individual who has the accountability and responsibility to provide nursing care within the scope of their practice and in a manner consistent with their role and function at City of Hope.
The Clinical Research LVN II is responsible for the patient research tasks that fall under the LVN scope of practice, as delegated by and in assistance to the Clinical Research Nurse role. The LVN role is also responsible for any other work involved in coordination of clinical research activities within the Clinical Trials Office under the supervision/oversight of a Clinical Research Nurse - BSN.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assures that a positive service image is projected in all encounters with patients, visitors, and department staff. Provides accurate, reliable, courteous and timely services to all customers.
  • Coordinates with Clinical Research Nurses (CRN), and other research staff as needed, to ensure protocol compliance and the timely completion of tasks. Reviews Protocol and patient's EMR, initiates insurance preauthorization requests, gathers source documents, facilitates scheduling of screening procedures and communicates with the CRN and research team questions and issues in a timely manner.
  • Assist the CRN and clinical research staff with management of clinical trials patients, coordination of patient visits, and other duties required to meet protocol requirements within the LVN scope of practice.
  • Ensures appropriate documentation of research notes and other required data for clinical trials within the EMR and other systems. Completion of varied assigned tasks that fall under the LVN scope of practice on a daily basis.
  • Demonstrates competence appropriate to their role and function in organizing, processing, coordinating and following up on study patients as needed. Maintains processes to assure that patients are scheduled for their follow-up appointments.
  • Completes follow up call on new patients and existing patients as required.
  • Applies effective interpersonal and communication process utilizing verbal and non-verbal skills to achieve organizational service goals of customer satisfaction and positive work environment.
  • Displays professional commitment and supports the team by promoting unity and teamwork among co-workers, maintaining a positive attitude and good working relationships.
  • Collaborates with Internal Contacts: Clinical Research Coordinators, Clinical Research Nurses, Bio-Specimen Coordinators, Regulatory Coordinators, interdisciplinary and ancillary departments.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement projects as assigned.
  • Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested


Qualifications
Basic Education, Experience and skills required for consideration:
  • Completion of a licensed vocational nursing program
  • 1 year of work experience as an LVN in a clinical research setting or oncology medical environment.
Required Certification/Licensure:
  • Current LVN License in the state of California. Must successfully complete and maintain certification
  • Current IV Therapy / Blood Withdrawal Certification in the state of California, and BLS approved by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.
Preferred Education Experience and skills:
  • Previous experience in research, infusion or ambulatory setting
  • Basic knowledge of related computer system and EMR system
  • Maintain high level of productivity
