Senior Research Assistant

The Department of Palliative, Rehabilitation & Integrative Medicine focuses on the delivery of supportive care, palliative care, physical medicine, rehabilitation and integrative medicine to MD Anderson patients and support to their family members.

Job Responsibilities

1. Perform experiments that will include basic molecular and biochemical bench-work, cell culturing of mammalian cancer cell-lines and tumor lines and various assays, cell proliferation, cell death, cell invitation and migration, and mechanism studies using various molecular biology tools.

2. Performing basic molecular biology techniques such as DNA, RNA and protein extraction and measurement, DNA, RNA and protein gel electrophoresis (agarose and polycrlyamide) hybridization techniques (Southern, Northern and Western blots, In situ Hybridization), real-time quantitative RT-PCR, recombinant DNA cloning, subcloning, restriction mapping, BAC clone use and computer analysis of DNA sequences and PCR and primer design.

3. Conduct animal maintenance, inventory, breeding, anesthesia, euthanizing, genotyping (PCR and electrophoresis), and treatment administration (intravenous injection, intra peritoneal injection, gavage, et al). Help with animal imaging and harvesting tissue sample.

4. Perform duties in accordance with instructed methods under the direction of the principal investigator or designee and potentially independently design and execute the experiment to validate targets, optimize compound selection and explore therapeutic potential of drug targets.

5. Plan experiments based on experimental results and able to troubleshoot problems that arise using critical thinking skills and previous knowledge learned in the RAII position.

6. Be responsible for data collection, storage and preliminary analysis of data collected in accordance with the research protocols.

7. Purchasing and stocking laboratory supplies, preparation of media and reagents, optimization of lab protocols, and maintenance of laboratory equipment. This requires the monitoring of workflow and planning as it pertains to the need for supplies, equipment maintenance and stock solutions.

8. This position conducts close work with other technicians, students, post-doctoral fellows, visiting scientists and staff members in scientific protocols currently used. Good communication skills and good working knowledge of equipment and research aims are a necessity.

9. Adhere to institutional and regulatory guidelines when handling, recording, and collecting data and samples on both preclinical and clinical studies.

10. Good reading and comprehension skills are a necessity in understanding scientific articles and journals related to experiments being conducted.

11. Develop leadership skills to maintain, plan and execute projects based on project aim and hypothesis.

12. Train new lab members to perform all duties listed to reach project aim.

13. Collaborates or assists with supervisor and senior research staffs with preparation of reports and grant requests.

Education Required: Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Experience Required: Three years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. With preferred degree, one year of required experience
