About the Position

This position is for one full-time postdoctoral scholar who will be an active member and participant in the Stroke & Applied Neuroscience (SANS) Center laboratory under the direction of Drs. Michael Levitt and Louis Kim in the UW Medicine Department of Neurological Surgery. The SANS Center (www.sanscenter.org) is an NIH-funded research unit that conducts multidisciplinary translational research projects at the intersection of neurological surgery, bioengineering, and mechanical engineering to investigate the pathophysiology and course of diseases and disorders of the brain and its blood vessels, and uses this knowledge to advance neurological surgery practice and patient outcomes. DNA, RNA and proteomic based identification of pathways of vascular endothelial biology are a priority of this effort, as is familiarity with mitochondrial biology.

This position involves techniques including cell culture, endothelial genetic and morphological analysis, mitochondrial isolation and functional assays, flow cytometry and fluorescence activated cell sorting, confocal microscopy, RNAseq, processing of biofluids and biospecimens for analysis, and interpretation of genome/exome sequencing. It is expected that the successful applicant will work independently, but collaborate with all members, postdocs and trainees in the lab on major projects. The applicant will also assist in the preparation of grant reports and grant proposals, including securing additional postdoc and junior faculty funding. Career development is a major goal of the SANS Center, and the successful applicant will have the full support of the PI and all associated faculty to help achieve their career goals and advance academic careers. 

Qualifications

Eligible applicants should have a Ph.D. in neuroscience, bioengineering or a related field. For the current position we are seeking an individual with experience in the above laboratory techniques, even if not from a neuroscience background. Bring your knowhow and enthusiasm and we will teach you how it applies to neurosurgical diseases and their treatment.

Academic Appointment

This fully-funded appointment to the academic staff as a postdoctoral scholar entails no formal teaching responsibilities; however, the position will be expected to assist in training laboratory personnel (postdoctoral fellows, neurosurgery residents, students, and technicians). Academic staff members at the University of Washington are expected to engage in productive research, and to seek publication of their results in peer-reviewed research journals.

Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement. The initial appointment shall be for a minimum of 1 year (12 month service period). The total appointment duration is not to exceed 5 years, including postdoctoral experience(s) at UW and other institutions.  Salary is commensurate on months of experience as defined by the collective bargaining agreement, and benefits include comprehensive health and retirement plan options.
