The Associate Scientist within the Infectious Diseases Research Unit (IDRU) will support a team in the design and execution of scientific studies to identify and validate host targets for treatment and/or prevention of infectious diseases. The IDRU is one of four Research Units in the R&D organization at GSK and is responsible for the discovery of novel approaches & targets to treat infectious diseases that threaten our health and progressing them to clinical proof of concept studies. In this role you would be responsible for conducting cell-based experiments using biochemical and molecular techniques. The successful candidate will be science driven, assume personal accountability and is keen to learn through experience to advance in their career.

Key accountabilities:
  • Perform assay development using molecular, biochemical and cell-based assays to support drug discovery against host targets associated with infectious disease.
  • Execute in vitro assays such as SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, immunofluorescence studies, RNA extraction, qRT-PCR, lentiviral transduction, and gene silencing with siRNA for target validation and discovery of new therapeutics through activity and mechanism of action studies.
  • Interpret, record, and present complex biological data at group meetings and other company meetings
  • Commit to continual improvement by reading and applying the latest scientific literature, methodologies and technologies.
  • Comply with all standards and practices of data integrity, ethics, and safety.
  • Model GSKs values of patient-focus, respect, transparency, and integrity

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology, molecular biology, immunology or related field with 1 to 3 years of relevant research experience
  • Prior experience working with instrumentation associated with cell culture, biochemical assays and molecular biology
  • Proactive and highly self-motivated with strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and organization skills with the ability to work independently and in a fast-paced team environment
  • Proficient with standard office products including graphing programs such as GraphPad Prism
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
  • 1 to 3 years pharmaceutical, biotechnology or academic laboratory experience working in a matrixed drug discovery project team
  • Demonstrated experience working with mammalian primary cell culture and molecular biology
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities
