The primary purpose of the Senior Research Assistant position is to provide supervision, special training to technical personnel and/or highly technical work in medical and related research projects. This job will provide ample experience in genomics/epigenomics research involving human patient samples and genetically engineered animal models as well as lab management. This job will provide an opportunity for career growth with the expectation of transitioning into a key member of the lab responsible for technical operations in the lab.

Key Functions:
  • Coordinates and conducts molecular biology experiments exercising considerable imagination, initiative and inventiveness in the details of experiments and interpreting the results.
  • Responsible for major participating in the development and optimization of techniques.
  • Responsible for partial lab management duties.
  • Helps with mouse genotyping.
  • Responsible for zebrafish colony management.
  • Compiles, writes, and submits reports to superior as directed and assigned.
  • Supervises and instructs students, technicians and other staff members in their work and assists them as assigned or delegated.
  • Assists the principal investigator and senior research staff with scientific business on a daily basis to include: write and edit manuscripts, abstracts, protocols (animal and laboratory), and grants; compile, write, and submit reports to the principal investigator,; prepare and present data for publication or scientific meetings; and, obtain and distribute pertinent research materials/data.
  • Contributes to project team.
  • Employ safe laboratory practices.
  • Maintain research records and laboratory notes.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and present data at laboratory and departmental meetings.
  • Interacts closely with other research staff across institutional functional teams.

Education

Required: Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field. Preferred: Master's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Experience

Required: Three years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. With preferred degree, one year of required experience.

Preferred:

• Prior experience with lab organization and management.

• Experience with animal handling and genotyping.

• Experience with genomics techniques.

• Must be highly motivated, reliable, responsible, well organized and a careful record keeper with good attention to details.

• Excellent communication skills are required as well as the ability to work well in a collaborative and interdisciplinary team environment.
