Job Description

ASU Biodesign Clinical Testing Laboratory (CTL) within the Knowledge Enterprise is seeking a talented full-time Automation Engineer Associate to join their growing support team. As the Automation Engineer, you would be working with minimal supervision to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair clinical automation instruments. you will also install, calibrate, validate, and coordinate the movement of sensitive equipment between laboratory sites as well as provide training, staff support, and development consulting in a heavily automated and regulated high complexity clinical testing lab. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and attention to detail are critical for this position.

Salary Range:

$47,200 - $65,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties:

  • Develops and services integrated automated assay systems including motion control/robotics, electrical circuits, fluidic/pumping systems, and optical components.
  • Assists with the training, maintenance, and use of automated assay equipment in a clinical diagnostic setting
  • Set-up/installation, calibration, qualification, and documentation of complex equipment
  • Decontamination and tear-down of complex equipment
  • Interfaces with equipment manufacturers to source equipment or procure parts
  • Provides routine and emergency maintenance of complex, critical equipment
  • May supervise, coordinate, or monitor activities of subordinates
  • May coordinate the activities of co-workers to replicate or resolve errors
  • Maintains records and documents in a manner compliant with all regulatory requirements
  • Audits work products and efforts
  • Assists in developing corrective action preventative action (CAPA) plans

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field AND two (2) years of engineering or related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Evidence of a degree in Biomedical, mechanical, and electrical disciplines 
  • Experience with Beckman Coulter Biomek liquid handling platform highly valued
  • Experience with VBA, Jscript, or similar language preferred
  • Experience automating tasks and confronting the challenges of translating and scaling high-throughput laboratory processes
  • Experience as a field service engineer or field applications specialist is highly valued.
  • Experience in a biological wet lab valued.
  • Experience coordinating the troubleshooting and repair of multi-system equipment
  • Experience providing advice and assistance in the maintenance of a wide variety of instruments with a preference for: Automated liquid handling platforms (Biomek preferred), Bead purification, RT-qPCR, Multi-mode Spectrophotometry
  • Experience in articulating complex engineering topics to individuals with minimal technical knowledge
  • Experience in reading and deciphering schematics, Electrical/Fluidic/Mechanical
  • Demonstrated knowledge of molecular biology
  • Demonstrated knowledge with common clinical molecular diagnostic platforms and assays (qPCR, ELISA, NGS) 
  • Demonstrated knowledge with highly regulated environments, GMP, GLP, CLIA, CAP preferred
  • Experience in operating in a fast pace environment and adapt as priorities evolve
  • Evidence in: learning from mistakes, accepting new challenges, and constantly developing further knowledge at the interface of translational science and automation

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds
  • Working while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be required and provided by the department. 
  • Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of hazardous materials incidents
  • Clearly communicate to perform essential functions
