1. Introduction of the School of Marine Sciences, SYSU

Located in the beautiful coastal city of Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, the School of Marine Sciences (SMS) of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) was established in 2008. It enjoys a strong humanistic atmosphere and an academic-friendly environment. The development goal of SMS is “to build a school based on the South China Sea to embrace the deep sea and to establish a comprehensive marine-science discipline cluster at world-leading level.” SMS has formed its features and advantages in Physical Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, and Geological Oceanography.

At present, the School has 70 all-time teachers, including 23 professors, and 43 associate professors. The School has received nearly 500-million yuan research funds in total and published more than 1,300 papers; the School provides excellent teaching and research environment for  teachers, with the support of more than ten laboratories and research platforms at the national or provincial level, the National Supercomputer Center of SYSU (TH-2 Supercomputer), the 6,800 dead-weight-ton Marine Research Fieldwork Vessels, the deep-diving submersible, large-scale sea experimentation devices, the Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory(Zhuhai), a new school building with an area of more than 60,000 square meters and other large facilities.

· 100 Top Talents Program

① Leading Talents: the applicants should work on a relevant research field involving great innovation, high potential for development, and key generic technology; have made prominent achievements of great innovation and significant influence.

② Outstanding Talents: the applicants should have outstanding potential for scientific research and technical innovation; work on a relevant field with significant development potentials; have made well-recognized professional achievements and have papers published as first or corresponding author on top-notch academic journals.

③ Excellent Scholars: the applicants should have excellent innovation mentality and outstanding potential for development; have made high-level and innovative professional achievements.

④ Assistant Professors: the applicants should achieve a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctor’s degree in renowned universities, institutes of science and technology in China and overseas or in universities where the marine-science related discipline is dominant; have made relatively good research achievement and possess a good potential for development; receive doctor’s degree for less than three years upon graduation.

· Full-time Researcher Positions

① Distinguished Researchers: applicants should have remarkable academic potential and have achieved excellent research results; have published at least three significant academic results in principle (the amount can be less than three if some are particularly outstanding); have worked as postdoctoral researcher, lecturer or assistant professor in renowned universities or institutes in China or overseas; conduct at least one project at or above provincial or ministerial level as Principal Investigator (PI) (candidates from overseas can be exempted from this requirement).

② Distinguished Associate Researcher: the applicants should have fairly prominent academic potential, and have made relatively significant academic achievements; have published at least two outstanding academic results in principle (the amount can be reduced to one if the academic achievement is particularly outstanding); be an excellent doctoral or postdoctoral graduate in renowned universities or institutes in China and overseas.

③ Postdoctoral Researchers: the applicants should be in relatively high academic level and have good research capability; have received a doctor’s degree for less than three years upon graduation in renowned universities or institutes at home and abroad.

4. Remunerations and Benefits

To introduce talents to SYSU, the University provides talents with competitive remunerations, work allowance in Zhuhai Campus, and other benefits, coupled with relocation allowance and relevant start-up funds. Teaching staff and their families are offered with apartments for housing, sound medical services and educational resources supported by the University’s affiliated hospital and schools.

The University provides researchers with competitive salaries, work allowance in Zhuhai Campus, and annual merit pay. If qualified, researchers can apply for a three-year extension of contract as distinguished researcher or distinguished associate researcher, or apply for promotion to associate professor or professor position.

Introduction of the “marine discipline cluster” in Zhuhai Campus, SYSU

Sun Yat-sen University, founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen and with an educational tradition spanning over 100 years, is a preeminent research, academic and cultural center, and the premier location for talent development in South China. Under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and strongly supported by both the Ministry and Guangdong Province, Sun Yat-sen University has developed into a modern comprehensive university that enjoys a reputation as a top-tiered university nationally and a renowned university internationally. At present, the University consists of five campuses in the three cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai, and Shenzhen, and ten affiliated hospitals. In Zhuhai Campus, a comprehensive “marine discipline cluster” has been established, with its research and education covering disciplines and majors such as Physical Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Geological Oceanography, Geological Oceanography, Geophysics, Deep Seabed Mineral Resources, Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, Deep-water Technology and Devices, Marine Resource Exploration and Development, Marine Engineering and Information, Coast and Coral Reefs Engineering, Marine History, Marine Archaeology, International Law, Oceans Law, and International Relations.

The University is now building a 6,800 dead-weight-ton Marine Research Fieldwork Vessels, which will be the largest nationally and third-largest globally and will serve as the mobile platform for observation, exploitation, and experimentation on the sea for the discipline cluster. Besides, the University, with the help of TH-2 Supercomputer, which ranks first worldwide for six consecutive times, offers strong technological supports for the establishment of the Earth System Model(ESM), access to massive data from the South China Sea Observing System (SCSOS, an observing system that provides observations on the oceanic and atmospheric state from ground-based, ocean-based, air-based and space-based instruments).
