What You Will Achieve

As part of the Comparative Medicine team, under supervision of the Attending Veterinarian, you will support the Comparative Medicine laboratory animal veterinary program by providing veterinary care and technical assistance duties. In addition, you will provide direct technical support to partners in Research and Development in the delivery of projects by the completion of experiments, procedures, protocols or studies involving animal models.

How You Will Achieve It

Provide veterinary care for all species used in research and development as a competent technical contributor:
  • First line evaluation of clinical cases.
  • Under direction of the veterinarian, initiate diagnostics and treatments.
  • Monitor treatment and progress.
  • Preventive medicine: collect and submit samples for disease surveillance.
  • After hours, weekend, and holiday clinical coverage.
  • Maintain stocks of clinical supplies and medicines.
  • Arrange for maintenance of clinical equipment.
  • Administrative aspects of the rodent health surveillance.
  • Biosecurity program - support research staff by submitting biologic samples for pathogen screening prior to in-vitro administration and report results.


Regulatory compliance:
  • Demonstrates basic working knowledge of Animal Welfare Act regulations, The Guide for the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and AAALAC standards.
  • Maintain accurate clinical record keeping.
  • Animal welfare enhancement.
    • Support the environmental enrichment program and assessment / introduction of novel items as needed.
    • Seek opportunities to promote the 3 R's (Reduction, Refinement, Replacement).
  • Partner with Global Science & Technology and/or Research Units on surgery and anesthesia activities.
    • Surgery calendar maintenance.
    • Ordering supplies and stocking of the surgical suite.
    • Provide anesthesia support under supervision of veterinary staff.
    • Provide complete peri-operative care and support.
  • Provide clinical care and maintain clinical records for veterinary surgical case.
    • Maintain sanitation in treatment and surgery facilities.
    • Instrument cleaning and sterilization.
  • Collaborative scientific efforts.
    • Project participation.
    • Attend continuing education meetings.


May be required to work under one of the following: The United States Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act and associated Regulations and Standards, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Good Laboratory Practices, Public Health Service Policy and/or AAALAC accreditation standards.

Qualifications

Must-Have

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 1-2 years of related experience working under AAALAC standards
  • Ability to demonstrate level of technical skills and abilities.


Nice-to-Have

  • Certified Veterinary Technician or Registered Veterinary Technician, or Licensed Veterinary Technician certification preferred.
  • Experience working in a pharmaceutical setting preferred.

This is an Essential Personnel role:

Essential Personnel are defined as the staff that are required to report to their designated work location, to ensure the operation of essential functions or departments during an emergency, as determined by Pfizer, or when the business has suspended operations. There are some individuals who may be required to perform essential services remotely and those individuals will be identified in advance and notified by their supervisors, but in most cases Essential Personnel are required to be on-site during an emergency or suspension of operations.
