Position Summary:

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the School of Medicine seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor position.  This is a twelve month, full time (100% FTE) continuing appointment in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the School of Medicine – Southern Illinois University Carbondale.   This position is a tenure track, state funded position, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2021, (no later than Jan 1, 2022). Appointment to include research space and competitive start-up funds. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching in the Medical School curriculum and in the graduate programs of the Department.  The specific area of research for the candidate should be competitive for extramural funding and preferably complement existing departmental strengths in Biochemistry, which include gene regulation, RNA Biology and genome integrity.

Teaching 25%: Prepare and deliver lectures and/or laboratory experiments in courses taught by the department in the various graduate program curriculums and participate in the medical school curriculum as a facilitator and/or resource faculty. Serve on graduate thesis and dissertation committees

Research 70%: Conduct research in the field of biochemistry; prepare and submit grant proposals; prepare and publish papers; attend scientific meetings and present talks and posters; guide the research programs of graduate students; and supervise other laboratory personnel. Obtain external funding from state, federal and/or private sources.

Service 5%: The faculty member is expected to become engaged in service activities beneficial to the department, university, and the scientific community. Participates in meetings, trainings and other environmental, health and safety activities as required by the University and the SIU School of Medicine.

Exact distribution will be annually negotiated and finalized between the Department Chair and the faculty member, based on external research funding and programmatic curriculum needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in  Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or closely related field. A minimum of two years of postdoctoral experience is required.  Applicants must demonstrate research experience. The specific area of research of the candidate should be competitive for extramural funding.
