The Department of Immunology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is seeking applications for a Physician Scientist, term tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. The primary function of the position is (1) to lead independent laboratory research; (2) work in/with a clinical department one day per week for patient care responsibilities; and (3) participate in clinical research as an active member and leader of the research team and to apply technical expertise and experience to plan, coordinate, design, assist, and supervise the implementation of research projects in both the clinic and the laboratory, with the evaluation and interpretation of research data, and subsequent publications.

Scope: Perform research activities independently based on projects and grants or as planned in collaboration with other investigators as needed. The candidate is expected to take a leadership role of an active research team in the field of immunology and/or cancer immunotherapy. The candidate is expected to write manuscripts and obtain grant funding.

The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:

  • Expertise in immunology and/or cancer immunotherapy, with strong research background in the laboratory.
  • Allocate 20% time (at least one day per week) performing clinical duty and patient management.
  • Spend 80% time for independent research laboratory activity.
  • Comprehensive background in immunology and immunotherapy.
  • Commitment to learn to write and submit competitive grant applications as principal investigator or co-investigator.
  • Aspiration and resourcefulness to achieve greater scientific independence through the development of collaborative research projects.
  • Participate in the training of research scientists, postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows, graduate, medical and college students, as well as laboratory technicians.
  • A collaborative and friendly member/leader of a large cancer immunotherapy research group including research scientists, clinicians, statisticians, trainees, and supportive staff.

Select key functions:

  • Practice clinical medicine in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and the American College of Physicians, properly balanced with other academic activities.
  • Impact the quality and advancement of cancer research efforts within the appointed department and MD Anderson Cancer Center with a primary focus on immunology and cancer immunotherapy.
  • Plan, organize, direct, assist, and participate in experiments and assays related to clinical patient research samples, animal models and in vitro studies in a research laboratory.
  • Perform, design, and develop molecular biology, cellular biology, epigenetics, and immunological assays for the immunological studies of tumors and development of immunotherapy treatments for cancer.
  • Develop novel independent projects aiming to understand the resistance mechanism to immune checkpoint therapy at a cellular, molecular, and epigenetic level to identify novel biomarkers and increase efficacy of immune checkpoint therapy.
