Job Details

X-ray Science Division of Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is offering a Postdoctoral position to conduct research on x-ray cavities of cavity-based x-ray free-electron lasers (CB-XFELs). CB-XFELs are future fully coherent hard x-ray sources of extreme spectral brightness.  Your work will be focused on computer simulations of x-ray cavities; development and tests of x-ray-cavity optical components, x-ray monitors, cavity alignment procedures, and eventually on cavity tests. The R&D will be performed in a framework of a joint ANL-SLAC (SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory) project.

Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in physics with solid knowledge in optics (including x-ray optics).
  • Considerable skills in experimental physics and experience of working with complex optical systems are required.
  • Competence in using complex software and ability to develop new software tools is essential.
  • Experience of working at synchrotron  radiation or XFEL  facilities.
  • Understanding of abstract physical concepts and the ability to synthesize experimental results into a proper theoretical framework.
  • Good written and oral communication skills for writing scientific papers and presenting research results at scientific meetings are important.

Knowledge of Linux operating system, LaTeX document preparation system, GLE or other advanced graphical tools, Python or other programming languages is desired.

Company

Argonne is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, where talented scientists and engineers work together to answer the biggest questions facing humanity, from how to obtain affordable clean energy to protecting ourselves and our environment. Ever since we were born out of the University of Chicago’s work on the Manhattan Project in the 1940s, our goal has been to make an impact — from the atomic to the human to the global scale.

The laboratory works in concert with universities, industry, and other national laboratories on questions and experiments too large for any one institution to do by itself. Through collaborations here and around the world, we strive to discover new ways to develop energy innovations through science, create novel materials molecule-by-molecule, and gain a deeper understanding of our planet, our climate, and the cosmos.

Surrounded by the highest concentration of top-tier research organizations in the world, Argonne leverages its Chicago-area location to lead discovery and to power innovation in a wide range of core scientific capabilities, from high-energy physics and materials science to biology and advanced computer science.

At Argonne, we explore the world together in order to build a better one.
