The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of South Alabama invites applicants for a 12-month, non-tenure-track faculty position at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level. 


Position appointments will be commensurate with the applicant’s credentials and experience. In general, an applicant who holds a Ph.D. in a related area of biomedical science at the time of hire will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor, while the candidate with a Master’s in such an area will be appointed at the rank of Instructor.  Applicants must have a background in a related area of biomedical science, with broad knowledge in the field of biotechnology molecular sciences.  The successful applicant will be expected to develop and teach upper-level laboratory courses to undergraduate students that will be the foundational skills courses for a new program concentration in biotechnology, as well as serve as coordinator for the concentration. We are particularly interested in applicants who have demonstrated a strong dedication to undergraduate-level teaching and incorporate active-learning methods, such as Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences into their pedagogy. The faculty member will also be expected to teach courses relevant to their expertise as needed and assigned. Service activities at all levels of the university will be expected, as well as mentoring of students, in particular those in the biotechnology concentration. 

Minimum qualifications include: 

  • M.S. in a related area of biomedical science (Ph.D. for the rank of Assistant Professor)
  • Undergraduate teaching experience
  • Excellent communication, writing and technology skills 

The University of South Alabama is located on the beautiful Gulf Coast of Alabama in Mobile, a large metropolitan area (~600,000) with a small town feel and an abundance of southern hospitality. The Department of Biomedical Sciences is one of the largest STEM programs at South Alabama, with approximately 450 current students. The program offers a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences with concentrations in Pre-Health Professions, Biotechnology, and Public and Global Health.
