The Center for Cancer Research (CCR), part of the intramural program in the National Cancer Institute (NCI), is seeking an outstanding scientific leader to join the Vaccine Branch (VB) to build a program in cancer vaccines.  This is an unparalleled opportunity to develop an interactive basic-translational and clinical research program from the ground up, including future hire of tenure-track investigators, leveraging the unique environment and stable, long-term resources of the NIH intramural program.
The NCI Vaccine Branch has a strong track record of basic, translational, and clinical research in vaccines for cancer, HIV, and viruses that cause cancer.  With the ever-increasing success of immunotherapies for cancer, the CCR is making a commitment to expand its program in cancer vaccines, including therapeutic vaccines against virus-mediated cancers and tumor antigens, and prophylactic cancer vaccines.  For this purpose, the CCR seeks a tenure-eligible scientist with expertise in any area of vaccine development. Appointment will be made initially as co-Chief of the Vaccine Branch, equivalent to an academic department co-chair, with the expectation of providing long-term leadership for the branch’s laboratory and clinical programs.

The National Cancer Institute is part of the National Institutes of Health in the Department of Health and Human Services, a federal government agency.  The Center for Cancer Research is the largest component of the intramural biomedical research effort at NIH.  The incumbent will receive stable funding for an independent research effort, both basic/translational laboratory research and clinical research.  The incumbent would have access to plentiful resources in the NIH Clinical Research Center, the world’s largest dedicated research hospital located on the campus of NIH in Bethesda, Maryland; an extensive clinical research infrastructure, including research nursing, biostatistics, regulatory support, and data management; and a wide array of intellectual and technological research resources, including state-of-the-art advanced technologies and core facilities, including the VB Flow Cytometry Core as well as multiple core facilities in the CCR for transcriptomic and microbiome studies.   For an overview of CCR, please visit http://ccr.cancer.gov/.  For more information, contact Patrick Miller, Faculty Recruitment Coordinator at millerp@mail.nih.gov.

The successful candidate must have an M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree or equivalent, an established record in translational vaccine and cancer immunology research, demonstrated leadership ability, and proven effectiveness in mentoring and training.
