Portfolio Manager

The ASU-UA Collaboration Institute for Future Health (IFH) is hiring Portfolio Manager for (Cardiovascular; Neuro Psychiatric and Infectious Diseases) positions. Under senior administrative direction of the Deputy Director, the Portfolio Manager will be responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and supervising overall management of multiple concurrent complex, multi-stage research projects involving cardiovascular, neuro-psychiatric and infectious disease (COVID) across multiple institutions and/or companies to ensure thorough articulation of project scope and control of expectations, deliverables, outcomes, issues, needs and constraints involved to achieve optimal stakeholder satisfaction resulting in regulatory approval.

Essential Duties:

• Manage the day-to-day operational and tactical aspects of multiple or large-scale projects in cardiovascular, neuro-psychiatric and infectious disease (COVID) by creating complete task definition, work requirement identification, and mapping.
• Establish and continually monitors/manages project expectations with team; assigns tasks and identifies issues for resolution to ensure optimal team effectiveness.
• Manage the development of project teams by ensuring that project tasks are in line with skills, interests and abilities of individuals and may mentor subordinates.
• Manage, coach, and supervise all project team members both internal and contracted to ensure optimal outcomes. May need to provide technical assistance, materials, services, and other resources to ASU/ UA faculty.
• Work collaboratively with key stakeholders to define project scope, strategy, budget, and outcomes; identifies critical resource expertise and targets appropriate internal and/or external sources to ensure optimal outcome(s).  
• Review high-level deliverables for adherence to budget, time and resource requirements; identifies out of scope and/or other obstacles to successful achievement of objective(s).
• Oversee the evaluation of effectiveness of programs/projects to develop and implement the goals and objectives including improved methods of program/project delivery; evaluation methodology design and implementation including analysis of results and takes or recommends proper action based on outcomes.
• Prepare and maintain all project status reports and schedules; tracks milestones/deliverables, critical paths and dependencies; re-sets expectations as needed in consideration of project progress/outcomes.
• Prepare all post-project reports, budget allocations and summaries/filings to ensure timely dissemination of information to all interested parties.
• Respond to all inquiries regarding project status; prepares and responds to all regulatory reporting/filings to ensure compliance.
• Assist with developing proposals for external funding of projects.
• Work collaboratively with Principal Investigator(s) to engage leadership, associated scientists and other research related staff to define and identify all required project infrastructure including, but not limited to: space, build/reconfiguration of laboratory facilities, equipment, technology and instrumentation to ensure timely availability for successful launch and ongoing project operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree. 11 years related experience; 6 years of which include project management of complex technical or scientific endeavors.

Desired Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

PhD or MD with three (3) or more years’ experience in managing cardiovascular, neuro-psychiatric and infectious disease OR, any equivalent experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

Must have knowledge of cardiovascular, neuro-psychiatric and infectious disease, (physiological, anatomy, medical terms, disease diagnosis). Working knowledge of large-scale databases as they apply to biomedical research, advanced bioinformatics/analytics and biomedical remote sensor technology. Ability to processes dissemination of results through presentations, reports, and publications. Application and processes of how to conduct needs assessments using the principles, methods and techniques of process/quality improvement. Skill in planning, budgeting, implementing and evaluating projects. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, facilitating team projects with diverse faculty. Communication skills including ability to read, speak and write in English, effectively communicating relevant project information to other staff, faulty and collaborators.  Skill in challenging others to develop as leaders while clarifying roles and responsibilities. Skill in evoking creative and innovative thinking from team members while helping them to bring their ideas and career plans to fruition. Ability to handle difficult personnel situations directly, using appropriate discretion, HR advice, and respect for the individual.

In addition, may be required to provide interaction and support on ASU’s behalf with research partners, establishes and maintains liaison with regional, state or national organizations as appropriate. May be the primary point of contact for sponsored projects, attend meetings. Builds institutional capability in project and program management by engage with scientific task leaders and junior project managers through formal channels. Assesses training needs and selects training tools for team members. Organizes and leads necessary project team training efforts for all facets of the project and consults with management to coordinate training and monitor observation efforts.

Working Environment:

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; occasionally required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions. May be required to travel, within state and out of state, involving operation of a motor vehicle.
