The USDA, ARS, Food Safety and Enteric Pathogens Research Unit (FSEPRU) in Ames, Iowa is seeking a permanent, full-time Research Microbiologist/Animal Scientist to develop an innovative research program in turkeys focused on limiting colonization with food borne pathogens through understanding interaction between commensal organisms and their metabolites and the turkey intestinal tract. The successful candidate will conduct research to understand the interactions between intestinal tissues and commensal microbes, including foodborne pathogens Campylobacter and Salmonella, and impact of microbial metabolites on the host response. In addition, the candidate will enhance understanding of basic immunology and intestinal physiology of commercial turkeys.

The candidate will use in vitro and in vivo systems to define intestinal mucosal defense systems in turkeys as it relates to microbiome succession, interrogate interaction of Campylobacter and Salmonella with turkey mucosal defenses, investigate a basis for Campylobacter’s disparate lifestyles as a turkey commensal and human pathogen, and investigate inhibitory or antagonistic metabolites and feed additives to reduce Campylobacter/Salmonella colonization or modulate mucosal defenses to reduce colonization. The successful candidate will join a group of scientists conducting similar research for other foodborne pathogens and food animals (cattle, swine), and work closely with a microbial ecologist and Salmonella microbiologist on research objectives. Collectively, the group works to increase information and technologies needed to enhance pre-harvest food safety in the U.S. and around the world.
