The College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University seeks a distinguished academic leader to Chair the Department of Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience. The position is a permanent, full-time, tenured faculty position at the rank of Professor & Chair. The 12-month position is 100% state-funded. The position involves serving as the Director of Programs in Neuroscience, which awards both undergraduate and graduate degrees, and has faculty and students at multiple WSU campus locations. This position offers an opportunity to develop new strategic initiatives and advance areas of departmental excellence in biomedical research, and to promote and enhance the teaching of professional, graduate and undergraduate students. There are opportunities for substantial departmental faculty growth over the next 5 years.
Departmental Excellence in Teaching and Research:
Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience is one of five academic units in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). IPN has a significant teaching mission in the professional DVM curriculum, providing ~25% of the total curriculum. IPN’s role in this curriculum primarily focuses on the foundational components of professional biomedical education. In addition, IPN is home to a rigorous undergraduate program in Neuroscience that consistently produces award-winning graduates who not only pursue advanced professional and graduate degrees in biomedical fields, but also find employment in biomedical fields. It also houses a graduate program in Neuroscience that attracts talented national/international students. Our students compete successfully for scholarships and grants and obtain competitive positions in academia and industry upon graduation. IPN is known for innovative and student-centered education.
Research expertise in IPN includes both system/neurocircuit level as well as cellular/molecular level neuroscience. Research topics include addiction/substance abuse, feeding/obesity and metabolic homeostasis, sensory, sleep and circadian biology, neurodegeneration, stress, and developmental neurobiology, as well as ion channels, receptors and synaptic physiology. An additional focus is muscle biology ranging from molecular mechanisms of contraction to movement. Research intensive faculty typically have research support from federal agencies (NIH, NSF, DoD) or other extramural entities. Faculty and trainees also serve scientific societies, local and federal agencies, non-profit foundations, and other educational programs through outreach efforts both nationally and internationally.
IPN is located on the Pullman campus in an award-winning, 128,000 ft2 research building designed to house neuroscience research. The building was completed in 2013 and contains outstanding vivarium, research, office and teaching spaces. The department manages numerous shared pieces of equipment available to members of the department, college and university communities.
College and University Context
The CVM has broad missions in research, teaching, and service in biomedical and clinical sciences. The CVM at WSU consistently ranks in the top 5 of US colleges of veterinary medicine for federal research funding and number of graduate students. In addition to neuroscience, research strengths in the CVM include global animal health, infectious disease and immunology, chromosome biology and DNA repair, individualized medicine, antimicrobial resistance, functional genomics, reproductive and developmental sciences, and tissue bioengineering and remodeling. Graduate programs in the college collaborate through the integrative Programs in Biomedical Sciences to provide financial and curricular support, as well as professional development opportunities. The college has a significant engagement with undergraduate biomedical education with programs in Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Genetics and Cell Biology.
WSU has multiple campuses across the state of Washington with a system-wide student population of ~31,600, of which ~21,000 are on the Pullman campus. WSU is a Carnegie Tier-1 – very high research activity university with annual research and development expenditures of over $360 million. As the land-grant research institution for the state of Washington, WSU emphasizes educating students from a broad range of backgrounds, scholarly inquiry in the “practical arts”, and support of significant outreach and extension functions. IPN has significant engagement with faculty and students on the WSU Health Sciences campus in Spokane and the WSU campus in Vancouver.
Reporting Structure / Faculty / Students
The Chair of IPN is responsible to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. IPN has 19 fulltime, tenure track research intensive faculty, 3 tenure track faculty with partial appointments in IPN, and 6 permanent Career Track faculty who focus primarily on the teaching mission. Depending on position, faculty may teach in in the DVM, graduate, or undergraduate curriculum or in a combination of these. The Graduate Program in Neuroscience has ~45 faculty members from across the university. The graduate program has ~30 students. The undergraduate program has ~200 advisees with ~50 certified majors.
The Chair of IPN will be an individual with outstanding academic credentials who can articulate a clear vision for leading the department while promoting a broadly shared sense of collegiality, mutual respect, and support within the department, college, and university. The successful candidate is expected to have developed and sustained a productive, nationally and internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program complementary to existing department and college strengths. In addition, the candidate will have a record of excellence in graduate education and familiarity with undergraduate education. The Chair’s portfolio will include fiscal and personnel management of IPN; participation in and promotion of mentoring and professional development for faculty members in multidisciplinary research, teaching, and service; fostering of evidence-based teaching methods, curricular development and scholarship in teaching; and promoting outreach and the field of neuroscience in the college, university and nation.
Applicant must hold an earned doctorate (PhD/MD/DVM or equivalent) in biomedical sciences or related field and have a record of academic accomplishment suitable to a Professor at a Tier-1 research-intensive university.
Nationally to internationally recognized, extramurally funded research activity with disciplinary leadership complementary to existing department and college strengths.
Demonstrated experience in graduate education.
Demonstrated record of success in fiscal and personnel management in an academic environment.
Experience working in an environment with simultaneous missions of biomedical research, and professional, undergraduate and graduate teaching.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated successful commitment to the recruitment, retention, inclusion, and development of a diverse faculty, staff and student community.
Job location is in Pullman, a community of ~35,000 located in the beautiful rolling hills of the Palouse region of southeast Washington. Pullman is located ~8 miles from Moscow, ID, home of the University of Idaho. The combined Pullman-Moscow community has a vibrant college-town atmosphere with excellent schools, ample entertainment venues and restaurant selection, and outstanding access to nearby outdoor recreational opportunities.
