Postdoctoral Scientist / Career Development Fellow
Salary Range £31,602 to £34,443 per annum
Fixed-term, 3 years
MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK

We are seeking a highly motivated and independent Postdoctoral Scientist, to work as part of a small, interactive team in the group of Dr Michel Goedert, to understand the molecular pathogenesis underlying common neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. In collaboration with the group of Dr Sjors Scheres in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology’s (LMB) Structural Studies Division, we are using electron cryo-microscopy to determine the high-resolution structures of amyloid filaments from brain. Our work is focused on filaments made of assembled tau protein and alpha-synuclein. Diseases we are working on include progressive supranuclear palsy, globular glial tauopathy, Parkinson’s disease (sporadic and familial) and dementia with Lewy bodies. In parallel, we are using this information to investigate mechanisms of amyloid assembly in experimental systems, including transgenic mice.

You should have an MD and / or PhD in a relevant subject. Good communication skills and the ability to work well both independently and in a group are essential. Further information about the position may be obtained from Dr Michel Goedert at mg@mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk. Additional information about the Neurobiology Division and the LMB as a whole may be obtained at www.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk

The successful applicant will be awarded a 3-year Career Development Fellowship / Postdoctoral Training Scheme position. This is a training and development position for a post-doctoral scientist who has recently completed their doctoral studies, is moving into a new research discipline or has limited experience of key transferable skills. The MRC LMB has excellent scientific core facilities and training opportunities.

The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology is a research institute within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). UKRI is an entity that brings together nine partners to create an independent organisation with a strong voice for research and innovation, more information can be found at www.ukri.org.

Working for UKRI MRC provides a whole host of benefits including a defined benefit pension scheme, excellent holiday entitlement (40 ½ days including bank holidays and privilege days) and Benenden Healthcare membership. You will also have access to employee shopping / travel discounts, on site sport and social facilities, as well as salary sacrifice cycle to work schemes and childcare vouchers.
