The Department of Biological Sciences at Union College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor (pending administrative approval) to begin in September 2021. A Ph.D. in the Biological Sciences or a related field is strongly preferred.  Post-doctoral experience is a plus. The successful candidate will be required to teach Human Anatomy & Physiology I (HA&P I) to students interested in healthcare-oriented programs of study. This class will consist of both a lecture and laboratory component. The successful candidate will also teach introductory biology and other courses as needed in consultation with the Chair. Candidates must have prior experience in teaching Human Anatomy & Physiology and be competent to teach introductory Biology. Our goal is to hire an outstanding individual with a demonstrated commitment to teaching and research, and the College strongly supports faculty and student research.

The Department of Biological Sciences at Union College is committed to teaching and mentoring students in the classroom and in our active research laboratories. Housed in the newly constructed Integrated Science and Engineering Complex, the Department is well equipped with NSF-funded instrumentation such as a microCT, a 3-D multicamera motion analysis system, Illumina DNA sequencer, scanning electron microscope, and substantial tissue culture and animal care facilities.

Founded in 1795, Union College is a small, selective, private college with a history of excellence in the liberal arts, sciences, and engineering. We emphasize close collaborations between faculty and students and have campus-wide initiatives promoting interdisciplinary activities. The Department of Biological Sciences contributes to numerous interdisciplinary programs including Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Science and Policy and Neuroscience. The College is located in New York’s Capital District, a metropolitan area of over one million people in the foothills of the Adirondacks. Our region offers a range of residential options from urban to suburban to rural, along with a variety of cultural and recreational opportunities. In addition, both New York City and Boston are located within three-hour drives from campus.

Union College is an equal opportunity employer and strongly committed to student and workforce diversity. Union provides a blend of intellectual, social and cultural opportunities to facilitate the integrated academic, social and personal development of a diverse community. We value and are committed to a host of diverse populations and cultures including, but not limited to, those based on race, religion, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, national origin and veteran status. Increasing diversity on campus is a critical priority for Union, one that is integral to our mission of preparing students for a globally interconnected world. Our goal is not only to increase diversity, but to support an environment in which people from varied backgrounds can succeed and thrive. As such, we welcome applications from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the Biological Sciences. Union College is committed to providing access and will provide reasonable accommodation in its application process to individuals with disabilities that request such accommodations. We encourage all to comment in their cover letter on their experience mentoring, teaching and/or supporting people from underrepresented groups and their commitment to the ideals of joining a community of diverse faculty, students, and staff.

Candidates should submit the following via our portal at http://jobs.union.edu: (1) an application letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) statement of teaching interests and evidence of teaching effectiveness including any course and peer evaluations that are available, (4) statement of research interests and evidence of scholarship including copies of peer-reviewed publications, and (5) arrange to have three letters of reference forwarded to the search committee. Applicants should state in their cover letter how they will enhance the diversity of offerings and educational experiences if hired.

Review of applications will begin on January 30, 2021. Questions may be directed to Kathleen LoGiudice, chair of the search committee at bio-search@union.edu.
