Brief Description of Duties:

The laboratory of Dr. Sandeep Mallipattu in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine is seeking highly motivated candidates for postdoctoral training related to chronic kidney disease. Our research program focuses on identifying mechanisms involved in the progression of chronic kidney disease. Specifically, we investigate the mechanisms that regulate proliferation, differentiation, and regeneration in the kidney. We have found evidence that a highly specialized family of transcription factors, Krppel-Like Factors (KLFs), are critically involved in regulating fundamental cellular processes in the kidney. We are currently using novel in vitro and in vivo approaches to establish the physiological and pathophysiological functions of KLFs in various disease processes (Diabetic Nephropathy, Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, acute kidney injury transition to renal fibrosis); as well as high-throughput screening strategies to identify small molecular compounds that might serve as novel therapeutic agents in disease based on their ability to modulate the expression and function of KLFs. These projects involve collaboration with Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The incumbent must have excellent writing and communication skills and will be expected to take an active role in oral presentations.

  • Conduct experiments in animal models, including maintaining breeding stocks, genotyping and monitoring health on a regular basis. Cell culture and biochemical techniques such as RNA isolation, real-time RT-PCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescent, flow cytometry and Western blotting will be used to complement the animal models.
  • Literature searches; staying current in the field by reading and discussing the literature and experimental results with the supervisor and PI.
  • Participate/Assist with manuscripts writing based on the experimental findings.
