Role Summary:

To guide oncology discovery campaigns at Pfizer as part of Worldwide R&D in the Oncology Research Unit (ORU), the newly formed Tumor Evolution (TE) group located in La Jolla will develop and employ cutting-edge biological tools, such as cell engineering, high-throughput 3D assays, phenotypic screens, genome-wide screens, and organoid development, to quantify global cellular perturbations induced by oncogenic changes and by small molecules aimed at counteracting such changes. Team members will apply multiple biology-based disciplines to identify novel oncology targets and deepen our understanding of tumor heterogeneity and drug resistance, in combination with genetic modifications and target validation.

We are seeking an experienced cell and molecular biologist to contribute to the success of the Tumor Evolution (TE) Group within the Tumor Biology (TB) Department. The candidate should have expertise in cell line engineering technologies, target identification and target validation in a drug discovery context. This is an exciting opportunity to apply cutting-edge methods and contribute to the target portfolios of the ORU in one of the world's leading developers of novel therapeutics.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Execute various cellular and molecular techniques to validate genetic or small molecule perturbations of targets and downstream pathways such as: western blot, qPCR, ELISA, immunoprecipitation, gene expression, imaging platforms, and flow cytometry
  • Carry out experiments to test the functional consequences of genetic perturbations in cell-based model systems using genetic methods that include CRISPR-based gene editing technologies and RNA interference
  • Develop tool assets for advancing drug discovery projects including generation and maintenance of engineered 2D and 3D lines in a wide array of established cancers
  • Serve as a technical resource within the group for engineering and generating stable cell lines, phenotypic and biomarker assay development, or other technologies
  • Design and conduct well controlled high-quality scientific experiments to test biological hypotheses
  • Assist with the evaluation of new approaches and technologies within the group
  • Maintain electronic lab notebook in compliance with company policies
  • Stay current with relevant technologies including those relating to oncology, molecular, and cell biology
  • Work closely as a collaborative team member within the Tumor Evolution group, Tumor Biology lab personnel and Oncology project teams
  • Help to establish the TE Group and TB Department as an integral component of World-Wide Research & Development

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in cell and molecular biology or related field with at least 6+ years laboratory experience in an industrial or academic setting or master's degree with at least 3+ years laboratory experience
  • Expertise with an array of molecular biology methods including cloning, vector construction, PCR, DNA and RNA isolation, and qPCR
  • Expertise with a variety of cell biology techniques including cell culture, rigorous maintenance, cryopreservation, and cataloging of mammalian lines
  • Expertise in conducting experiments and analyses as part of research and development activities employing molecular biology techniques such as PCR, cell-based assays including cytotoxicity and proliferation, western blot, engineering and generation of stable cell lines, lentiviral production, biomarker assays, imaging assays, and flow cytometric assays
  • Ability to problem-solve and troubleshoot and willingness to explore novel techniques and approaches
  • Demonstrated ability to drive for results and generate innovative solutions with limited supervision

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong working knowledge of cancer biology is desired
  • Expertise in spheroids or organoid cultures is a plus; previous experience with RNASeq is a plus
