The Pfizer Emerging Science & Innovation Lead for Oncology (Western US) will be a key driver in harnessing external innovation to strengthen Pfizer Worldwide Research Development & Medicine (WRDM) pre-clinical pipeline. The candidate will perform targeted outreach to life sciences communities (including academia, biotech, venture firms, consortia, etc.) in key scientific innovation hubs. The candidate will have dual responsibility for the pipeline enhancement of the Research Unit (RU) as well as Pfizer's Center for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI) by sourcing cutting edge science, target proposals, discovery projects, pre-IND assets, as well as relevant breakthrough and enabling technologies and platforms. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, helping set the pre-clinical partnering strategy with the RU as well as CTI, identifying the most promising external innovation fitting the strategic need, rigorously assessing the science & technology, executing diligence together with scientific, legal and BD colleagues, and driving the governance process as appropriate. Thus, the incumbent will also have fiscal responsibilities (investing as well as monitoring spend against milestones) for post-deal alliances. The incumbent will also have primary responsibility in representing Pfizer within the region of responsibility as needed, including scientific & partnering conferences, in depth networking with leading academic institutions, and other relevant parts of the life sciences community.

The ES&I Emerging Science Lead (ESL) will align and work with the Oncology research unit and CTI to help build the strategy for the early stage portfolio in collaboration with the Chief Scientific Officer and his or her leadership team and its execution in areas spanning all oncology related disease areas.
The role supports Pfizer's broad strategic objectives which include creating a future R&D ecosystem where internal capabilities and science blend with external innovation and where breakthrough ideas can develop into differentiated medicines.

The Emerging Science Lead responsibilities include:
- Identify and evaluate external cutting-edge emerging science of strategic fit for WRDMN in the discovery to clinical candidate & technology space to source partnerships (incl. research collaborations, licensing, acquisitions) for CTI and RUs
- The ESL has networking & sourcing responsibilities for all Oncology related science across the West coast of the US & Canada in order to provide both CTI and RU with innovative cutting edge science, including novel biology, targets, lead discovery, up to clinical candidate projects, or breakthrough and enabling technologies & platforms from academia, biotech and other life science community sources
- Network with CTI partnered and other leading academic institutions/PIs in key scientific hubs to source new projects and target ideas
- Leverage Pfizer internal capability to establish WRDM as partner-of-choice and secure partnerships (eg, through in kind contributions, equity investments, combination/leveraging Pfizer internal assets, etc.)
- Lead early projects or partnerships sourced via a variety of funding mechanisms
- Represent WRDM at key events & conferences as needed in the respective region of responsibility
Qualifications:
- Requires seasoned PhD or MD/PhD with 10 years of industry experience in the Oncology related R&D sector with strong scientific track record
- Strong EQ for internal (within ES&I, RUs/WRD) and external networking and communication, including presentations to Pfizer leadership (ResCo, CSOs, WRD LT), potential external partners, and at scientific & partnering conferences
Prior Experience Preferred:
- Experience inOncology related diseases as well as other scientific fields
- Experience in developing scientific and business strategies to support innovative pharmaceutical product development in pharma/biotech.
- Experience with search and evaluation, due diligence, relationship and collaboration building, alliance management.
- Experience in pharmaceutical drug development (Idea to Candidate) process
- Experience in managing/tracking R&D budgets
- Experience with New Chemical Entity (NCE) and New Biologic Entity (NBE) products.
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate well across multiple business/group lines
