We invite applications for a fully funded research group leader position at IMBA, the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna.

At IMBA, we believe that curiosity makes science happen. IMBA is one of Europe’s leading scientific institutes. We make up a highly dynamic and collaborative community and our faculty has an over 60% success rate in ERC grant applications. We are looking for outstanding candidates from all areas of  biology, including interdisciplinary backgrounds, who aim to pursue an ambitious and innovative research program and establish collaborations within our campus. Our faculty are world leaders in research topics ranging from the 3D architecture of genomes and small RNA biology to the in vitro reconstitution of whole organs and embryos, united by our passion to discover molecular principles and mechanisms.

Successful candidates will be offered an initial contract of five years, with an anticipated extension to eight years, subject to external review. The recruitment package includes a competitive salary, four additional fully funded positions—two PhD students, one postdoctoral researcher, one technician—and generous consumables and investment budgets. Research groups also enjoy free access to a broad portfolio of scientific core facilities, including a mouse house, microscopy & cytometry, mass spectrometry, bioinformatics & high-performance computing, and stem cell and genome engineering facilities. Faculty will be able to recruit students through our highly competitive international Ph.D. program.

IMBA is located in the heart of Vienna, which is consistently ranked the #1 livable city in the world. Vienna offers a lively local and international cultural scene, a highly developed—yet affordable—metropolis, excellent public institutions from schools to parks, and easy access to many destinations in Europe and beyond. IMBA is further committed to supporting its faculty and staff with dual-career support and guaranteed subsidized onsite childcare. Together with the Institute of Molecular Pathology, the Gregor Mendel Institute, and the Max Perutz Labs, IMBA is part of the Vienna BioCenter—a vibrant research hub home to 1400 scientists  from over 40 different countries. In addition, the Vienna BioCenter supports a growing biotech scene with over 30 companies situated on campus. To support our large international community, IMBA and the Vienna BioCenter are a fully English-speaking campus.

Appointment will be based on scientific excellence. We at IMBA aim to counteract gender imbalance and therefore explicitly encourage women to apply. We likewise strongly and explicitly encourage people living with disabilities, LGBT individuals, and people from underrepresented racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds to apply.
