HZG is one of the 19 national institutions of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres e.V. (HGF). Around 1,000 employees carry out basic research and development work in close cooperation with national and international research institutions, research-oriented clinics and economic and public institutions.

At the Institute of Biomaterial Science some 100 scientists research multi-functional, polymer-based biomaterials for applications in regenerative medicine. Their implants and active agent delivery systems provide customised properties and functions to restore impaired body functions.

The Institute of Biomaterial Science in Teltow of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites applications for an Additive Manufacturing Engineer (m/f/d) 3D Printing / Mechanical Engineering with a focus on the development of multifunctional polymeric materials, in particular, the implementation of new material functions by geometries obtained by specific processing technologies. This is initially a 2-years fixed term contract with the potential of continuation depending on applicant’s performance. The place of employment is Teltow (Berlin, metropolitan area).

Your tasks

A highly responsible position, including supervision of 3D printing activity, design and production of 3D polymer parts and fulfillment of design principles. It is your task to prepare and monitor the supply of stock materials and supplies for 3D printing. You will ensure compliance with quality standards and specifications of printed parts through testing and analysis of results, and maintain accurate, detailed, and clear experimental records. This project includes research activities on various 3D printing techniques. In addition, you will use related analytical techniques for (local) chemical analysis, thermomechanical characterization and morphological analysis. The acquisition of third-party funding is expected.

Your profile

You have successfully completed a university degree with at least a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Material Science or a relating field. You complement this with expertise in material chemistry and a sound knowledge of analytical methods for the investigation for polymer-based materials, which is documented by scientific publications. You have in-depth and comprehensive practical and theoretical knowledge in the field of polymer-based materials. You are familiar with data analysis software and concepts, good record-keeping and have experience with 3D printing techniques.
