Complex In Vitro Models group at GlaxoSmithKline- Upper Providence

and

GSK Center for Optical Molecular Imaging at the

Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology,

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The post-doc would join the Complex In Vitro Models (CIVM) team within the In Vitro In Vivo translation (IVIVT) department in GSK's research organization. CIVMs mission is to improve predictive and translational value of preclinical models. We strive to improve models for mechanism of action, efficacy, safety and metabolism, aiming to assess these in the same systems whenever possible. The CIVM group closely collaborates with the research units, the medicinal science and technology (MST) organization, and other IVIVT groups.

The post-doc will also hold a visiting scholar position in the Biophotonics Imaging Laboratory (BIL) at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Headed by Prof. Stephen Boppart, the BIL is a dynamic and productive interdisciplinary research and training environment focused on developing novel optical biomedical imaging technologies, translating them into clinical applications, and driving them toward commercialization for improving healthcare.

In 2015, the GSK Center for Optical Molecular Imaging (COMI) was established as an Imaging Centre of Excellence in the BIL at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . The research focus for the COMI lab is on the development of advanced multimodal optical imaging platforms for driving drug discovery and development. The post-doc will be trained on various optical imaging modalities including SLAM (Simultaneous Label-free Autofluorescence Multi-harmonic Imaging), FLIM (Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy) and CRI (Coherent Raman Imaging) techniques, among others, developed in the COMI lab to support various GSK research activities.

GSK is seeking a forward-thinking post-doc for a 3-year term who has an interest in applying the optical imaging technologies developed in the COMI lab towards Complex In Vitro Models in an industrial drug discovery setting. The first part of the 3-year post-doc will be spent at the GSK Upper Providence site learning Complex In Vitro Models and Organoid culture systems that are applicable to drug discovery and the application for using label-free imaging. Once the training is complete, the post-doc will transfer to the COMI lab where the position will offer the opportunity to join the team that is performing proof-of-concept studies using complex in vitro models to develop cutting edge imaging applications in the COMI lab. The post-doc will also support the evaluation and transfer of a prototype deployable SLAM imaging system into a GSK drug discovery unit. Finally, the post-doc's remaining time will be spent embedding the new SLAM technology in GSK at the Upper Providence site, further extending the utility of this technology in a drug discovery setting.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • Recently qualified as a PhD in bioengineering, cellular biology, or related fields, with hands-on experience in optical imaging and microscopy technologies.
  • Experience with pre-clinical research using cell culture, complex in vitro models, spheroids, organoids and/or microphysiological systems.
  • Strong experimental research background in imaging systems for biomedical applications.
  • US Work authorization is required. Sponsorship not available.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Working experience of image data analysis software (C++, Matlab, Python) is a plus.
  • Willing to learn new technologies and methodologies.
  • Willingness to live and work for extended periods in Philadelphia, PA, and Urbana-Champaign, IL.
