Senior Research Assistant

The mission of the Department of Genitourinary Medical Oncology is to reduce the morbidity and mortality of genitourinary cancers for the benefit of our patients and for future generations.

Our clinical care is based on research into the biology of genitourinary tumors. With a clearer understanding of the biologic behavior of genes, molecules, and cells that are responsible for the formation and growth of these tumors, we have been able to develop treatments tailored to the individual patient. The Department of Genitourinary Medical Oncology is at the leading edge of research to identify important biologic markers to help us determine which patients are at greatest risk of advanced disease and metastasis.

Job Responsibilities

Perform small animal surgery (mouse): Perform castration, tumor cell injection (prostate, subcutaneous tail vein, femur), various treatment routes (IP, IV, and gavage), and perform necropsy.

Prepare, coordinate, and conduct experiments involving animal experiment.

Organize documentation and materials prior to proceeding with experiment. Requires precision in preparing materials and recording data.

Culture of human and murine cell lines (monolayer and suspension), culture of primary human and murine cells, cell transfection of plasmids (stable and transient), and cell transducing of viral particles.

Tissue fixation and embedding, sectioning of paraffin, plastic and frozen blocks, immunohistochemistry and immunocytochemistry, and confocal microscopy.

Uses standard techniques of molecular biology/biochemistry and cell culture (PCR, DNA, RNA analysis, protein analysis, Western blotting, and maintenance of primary cells).

Collect, prepare and report presentable data using graphs, charts and slides from the experimental data on PC computer, keyboard and software. Requires knowledge of and experience using various graphic, word processing, and statistical software programs. Assistance with writing manuscripts for publication or with grant application submission.

Performs ordinary laboratory functions: placing and receiving regular lab orders, prepare common solutions, and normal maintenance of lab equipment/reagents.

Other duties as assigned.

Education Required: Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Experience Required: Three years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. With preferred degree, one year of required experience
