Role Summary

The successful candidate is a subject matter expert in Microbiology/Molecular Biology and will support and assist colleagues through preparation of bacterial cultures and bacterial extracts for whole genome sequence analysis and other downstream processes/analyses. Incumbent will be a key member of a core facility providing microbiology and whole genome sequence analysis in support of all vaccine programs. Daily duties will also include general laboratory support (media preparation, reagent stocking, and ordering supplies). Incumbent will be willing to learn new techniques, be a self-starter and work semi-independently in a fast-paced multidisciplinary team environment .

Role Responsibilities
  • The candidate demonstrates proficiency in proper handling of bacterial isolates and clinical samples
  • Mastery of aseptic technique and BSL2 safety practices for working in the laboratory
  • Identification, culture, storage and tracking of bacterial samples; both clinical isolates and laboratory strains
  • Supports colleagues in the laboratory by performing routine laboratory duties that can include preparation of media, stocking of reagents, ordering supplies
  • Develops and follows standard operating procedures
  • Demonstrates ability to multitask project objectives, understands goals and their priorities as well as demonstrates problem solving skills in the planning and execution of experiments.
  • Interprets and summarizes experimental data. Participates in the evaluation of new methods or technologies.
  • Documents research findings in reports or presentations as well as electronic notebook.
  • Presents research findings in lab, group, team and departmental meetings/forums as appropriate.
  • Works efficiently as part of a team in a matrixenvironment


Basic Qualifications
  • MS degree in relevant field (Microbiology or Biology), with at least 4 years or BS degree with 6 years of relevant hands on experience, preferably in an industrial setting.
  • Extensive experience with culturing and identifying various bacterial species.
  • Mastery of aseptic technique
  • Ability to multitask project objectives, understand goals and their priorities as well as demonstrate problem solving skills in the planning and execution of experiments.
  • Proficiency in general molecular biology techniques
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organization and planning skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with strong motivation, work ethics and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and relevant scientific software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with DNA/RNA isolation
