The mission of The University of Texas M. D. The primary purpose of the Research Scientist is to support clinical writing as well as ongoing internal and external research collaborations in the Department of Investigational Cancer Therapeutics. More specifically, the candidate would perform major tasks including clinical manuscript writing, preparation of proposals for federal/state and private funding sources, assist in establishing confidentiality (CDA) and material transfer agreements (MTAs) with research collaborators, maintain regulatory compliance of clinical laboratory research protocols, and coordinate clinical research projects with collaborators focused on validating new approaches for liquid biopsies. This is a non-laboratory position.

Key Functions
  1. Clinical manuscript and grant writing
    • Prepare clinical manuscripts for publication in prestigious journals, including writing, reviewing, performing data analysis and statistical calculations, and coordinating with co-authors
    • Assist with grant proposal submission, including the preparation of NIH R01 proposals, or submissions for internal/external funding awards (federal/state or private funding opportunities)
    • Contribute to periodic funding status reports
  2. Manage clinical research projects with external industry or academic collaborators centered on validating new approaches for tumor liquid biopsies
    • Establish mutual confidentiality agreements (CDAs)
    • Draft material transfer agreements (MTAs)
    • Coordinate regular follow-up conference calls with research collaborators
    • Collect archival patient samples and prepare for shipping
    • Gather patient clinical outcomes data stored in electronic medical records (EMRs) and perform statistical analysis (SPSS)
    • Prepare abstracts for submission and subsequent presentation at major scientific conferences
  3. Maintain regulatory compliance of clinical laboratory research protocols
  • Amend laboratory protocols as necessary and submit to Internal Review Board (IRB) for approval
  • Be responsible for keeping research protocols updated with appropriate collaborator and co-investigator designations
  • Submit annual continuing review reports for laboratory protocols
  1. To maintain a high level of professional expertise and credibility through educational programs,

including on-site training / off-site conferences:
  • Attend department research meetings and conferences.
  • Attend approved off-site meetings and conferences.
  • Supplement education as needed through use of reference materials, lectures, etc.
  • Be punctual in arriving at all professional functions.
  • Inform appropriate staff and arrange coverage for experiments if needed
  1. Other duties and assignments:
  • To assist with other duties that may occur, including potential miscellaneous requests from PI
  • Understand and adhere to the policies and procedures related to conduct of clinical trials and human tissue as delineated in the department training manual and the institution policies and guidelines

    The performance for all expected outcomes is measured by observation by supervisor, faculty and co-workers, the accuracy and timeliness of work produced, and the demonstrated ability to effectively work under stress. The position also requires one to anticipate needs, to recognize situations requiring assistance and have the ability to refer or perform any necessary tasks, and to comprehend the goals of the department/program.

Required: PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field or Medical degree

Experience

Required: With PhD, no experience required. With Medical degree, two years of experience in experimental or scientific work.

Preferred: Previous experience with clinical manuscript writing, preparation of proposals for federal/state and private funding sources. This is a non-laboratory position.
