The University of Michigan Medical School has established a comprehensive research program, the Michigan Resuscitation Innovation and Science Enterprise (M-RISE), aimed at preventing brain damage caused by out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA).  M-RISE, in collaboration with the University of Michigan’s Departments of Emergency Medicine and Learning Health Sciences, and the Cardiovascular Center, is seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher for a two-year resuscitation science postdoctoral fellowship opportunity.

M-RISE combines basic science, clinical science and population science approaches to improve OHCA survival and neurologic outcomes.  The basic science project explores novel neuroprotective agents and delivery mechanisms in animal models. The clinical science project explores how these neuroprotective agents could be administered to humans by bystanders and first responders. The population science project uses a data-driven Learning Health System approach to reduce time to initiating CPR, defibrillation, and the administration of potential neuroprotective therapies.

Based on experience and interest, the fellow will work primarily on either the basic or clinical science projects, but will have foundational exposures to basic, clinical, and population science.  Fellows working on the basic science team in the research laboratory will study neuroprotective biotherapeutics in animal cardiac arrest models, with a goal of translating therapy to human subjects.  Fellows working with the clinical research team will contribute to creatively re-engineering clinical trial methodologies to prepare for a trial of a very early neuroprotective intervention in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Our labs are highly collaborative and part of the Michigan Center for Integrative Critical Care (M-CIRCC), a network committed to driving innovation and accelerating the path from basic research to real-world outcomes.

Required Qualifications*

We welcome applications from individuals holding doctoral or equivalent degrees in a relevant field.  We also welcome applications from individuals with doctoral-level health professional training in an area pertinent to OHCA accompanied by an interest in research.

Desired Qualifications*

Candidates should have a doctoral degree in a biomedical-related field of study; excellent organization, communication and interpersonal skills; and a record of scientific publication. Applicant must have a strong work ethic and be able to work both independently and with others within a research team. Experience with molecular biology, protein therapeutics, cardiovascular research, neuroprotective therapies, animal disease models and/or clinical trials would be beneficial.

The University of Michigan Medical School received funding from the American Heart Association to establish a comprehensive research program, The Michigan Resuscitation Innovation and Science Enterprise (M-RISE), focused on Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA).  OHCA is one of humanity’s most challenging health problems as less than 10% of people suffering a cardiac arrest survive with good neurological function.  OHCA is also a system problem, as survival requires multiple professionals and organizations—from 911 operators to first responders, to emergency department staff—that must act with impeccable coordination and maximum speed to enable survival.  Through interaction with all system-of-care components, fellows will have an opportunity to build on their existing skills, and complement their existing skills with new ones.  The overarching goal is to advance the M-RISE fellow’s training for optimal positioning for an investigative career in the science and implementation of innovative cardiac arrest strategies.
