ROLE SUMMARY

Heads a discovery unit located within the Oncology R&D Group (ORD) with an organization of ~ 60-100 staff with a focus on Oncology discovery and research. The primary accountability of the VP is to lead the strategic scientific evolution of the organization, identify targets and direct innovative research to deliver commercially viable therapeutics through clinical proof-of-concept (POC) for Phase III development in Pfizer's Business Units.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the Discovery Unit to deliver POC clinical oncology results that are medically differentiated and commercially viable, in partnership with Pfizer's Business Unit and in alignment with Business Unit strategy.
  • Provide and effectively communicate a compelling scientific vision to internal stakeholders including ORD leadership, Worldwide R&D (WRD) leadership, Oncology Enterprise Leadership and the CEO and corporate Board of Directors.
  • Serve as a magnet for the recruitment and retention of top scientific talent in cancer biology and related areas.
  • Build scientific capability and expertise for current and future projects in the areas of cancer biology and immunology.
  • Establish the unit as the hub for cancer discovery and development in the Pfizer Worldwide R&D (WRD) organization, in close partnerships with the leaders of the other research teams in ORD.
  • Merge cutting-edge science, unmet medical need, and commercial viability to identify opportunities for the development of differentiated drugs internally and externally (e.g., individual projects derived from discovery internally, from collaboration with external biomedical research groups, from partnerships or from the in-licensing of external candidates or programs).
  • Conduct programs with the highest level of scientific rigor to discover and test candidate therapeutics quickly and convincingly in humans, making scientifically sound decisions at each key milestone.
  • Nurture an entrepreneurial culture that (1) engages colleagues both within the discovery unit and beyond, (2) actively seeks, embraces, and successfully applies the best external biomedical research, and (3) possesses a strong drive to win the race with competitors to deliver the first and/or best in class therapies.
  • Lead by example - role model with a passionate commitment to cutting edge science, coupled with the desire to continuously build both his/her own reputation in cancer biology and immunology, and to bolster the scientific reputations of other ORD colleagues.
  • Build and sustain a strong focus on returns including; fostering an investor mentality (ROI), value focused approach to expenditures/investment, management of budgets/burn rates to deliver medicine-focused research and making strategic tradeoffs against scientific areas and drug discovery programs.
  • Partner with other Research and Development Leaders to develop talent across the organization.
  • Manage key relationships with:
    • Business unit development and commercial leaders
    • Internal partners including the other units in ORD, the Pfizer Oncology business unit, Global Product Development, partner lines such as Medicinal Chemistry, Biomedicine Design and the Early Clinical Development organization.
    • External collaborators including academic organizations, institutes and other biopharmaceutical organizations.
    • Executive Advisory Committee (EAC) and scientific members of the Board of Directors Development Committee including the CEO, President of Worldwide R&D, and the President of the Global Innovative Products division, which manages late-stage (post-POC) development and the post-approval marketing of assets emerging from discovery and early development efforts.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Doctoral level degree or equivalent experience (PhD, MD, or MD/PhD).
  • A proven track record of scientific achievement in cancer biology, with demonstrable evidence of interest in translational research.
  • A strong external reputation in oncology
  • A leadership mindset coupled with the innate ability to engage and motivate scientific colleagues.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in pharmaceutical and/or biotech R&D leadership preferred; alternatively, academic candidates should have documented experience in organizational leadership in the academic setting.
  • A thorough understanding of the principles of small molecule and biological therapeutic development and core drug delivery modalities employed by the ORD.
  • Experience in working with commercial and post-POC clinical organizations is preferred.
