The Oncology Research and Development (ORD) division is seeking a Director of Molecular & Cellular Biology (MCB), to lead a high caliber, productive team to discover breakthrough Cancer Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics (CVIT) for cancer patients. Specifically, this Director will lead a functional matrix team in their research to design, discover and develop novel cancer vaccines, oncolytic viruses and biotherapeutics.

Areas of responsibility will range from exploratory research through early clinical development. The incumbent will report to the Vice President of CVIT, will lead a team of about 15-20 scientists in the MCB team, and will collaborate effectively with various scientists and experts from our other oncology research groups, and our partners in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Drug Safety, and Clinical Oncology.

Key Responsibilities
  • Efficiently advance a portfolio of novel immunotherapy programs via strong leadership of the MCB team
  • Responsible for setting goals and priorities, guiding experimentation, and individual performance and motivation of MCB team.
  • As a member of the senior leadership team, contribute to overall strategy and operation of the CVIT department, and to that of our overall ORD efforts.
  • Apply deep knowledge and expertise in molecular biology, virology, immunology, and in vitro biologic assays to the discovery and development of antibody therapeutics, cancer vaccines, oncolytic viruses.
  • Apply expertise and experience in cancer biology and drug discovery to initiate and guide preclinical and early clinical research, including
    • novel target discovery and validation
    • design, generation, testing, and qualification of innovative bio- and viro-therapeutics
    • mechanism of action studies, drug combination assessment, and biomarker research.
  • Ensure quality of MCB research, applying high scientific rigor, cutting-edge technologies, and efficient, goal-oriented experimentation
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with partners across CVIT, ORD, and the company to influence strategy, guide research, make decisions, and efficiently manage resources.
  • Proactively facilitate professional growth and scientific development of CVIT and ORD staff.
  • Contribute to a culture that values teamwork, collegiality, accountability, and continuous learning and improvement.


Key Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in molecular biology/virology/biotechnology/cell or tumor biology or related field
  • Ten or more years of experience in biotherapeutic discovery research including molecular and cellular biology, virology, and in vitro experimentation, with preference for experience in an industry setting.
    • The ideal candidate will also have experience in one or more of the following areas: cancer vaccines, oncolytic viruses, antibody therapeutics
  • Current experience and expertise in cancer drug discovery with preference for immuno-oncology experience.
  • Track record of success in drug discovery and development and/or peer-reviewed publication of significant research findings.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate a diverse team of managers and scientists, provide mentoring and coaching, and promote individual career development.
  • Experience managing/supporting a portfolio of projects in a complex matrix organization.
  • Record of successfully initiating and managing internal and external collaborations.
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate new solutions and identify promising new directions.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
