This colleague provides quantitative analysis of drugs, and their metabolites from biological matrices to support Pfizer's Global, Small-Molecule, Discovery portfolio. This is accomplished through sample preparation using automated and manual techniques and analysis using liquid-chromatography/mass spectrometry. Colleagues are responsible for the development of "fit-for-purpose" assays and the associated assay troubleshooting and data analysis.

The primary role of the bioanalytical scientist is to provide quantitative analysis of drugs and metabolites from biological matrices in support of drug discovery programs. Fluid and tissue samples from non-regulated in vivo studies are analyzed to assess the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic properties of new chemical entities. A scientist in this role will have or acquire knowledge and experience in the development of quantitative analytical methodologies using primarily liquid chromatography/triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry. Knowledge of sample preparation, and the fundamentals of chromatography and mass spectrometry are needed as these colleagues are expected to identify assay issues and perform the associated troubleshooting. The bioanalytical scientist uses assay automation and IT processes to enable efficient bioanalytical support and to recognize opportunities for bioanalytical process improvement. This scientist interacts with cross-functional partners and bioanalytical teams and are expected to promote and share new bioanalytical practices and techniques within the group and therefore must demonstrate good written, oral, and interpersonal communication. This role supports a dynamic and complex portfolio so the scientist will experience changing priorities and must be able to balance analytical rigor and resource burn with the study's goals.

  • Responsible for the development of procedures such as protein precipitation, liquid-liquid, and solid-phase extraction that isolate drug molecules and their targeted metabolites from biological fluids and tissues.
  • Responsible for the development of liquid-chromatography/mass-spectrometry methods for the quantitation of analytes.
  • Responsible for the characterization and execution of fit-for-purpose bioanalytical assays in accordance with best practices and quality management systems.
  • Responsible for recognizing anomalous data and instrument behavior and able to propose a path for remediation.
  • Documents contemporaneously assay development and study support at a level that meets the expectations of Pfizer and global regulatory agencies.
  • Interacts with internal partners for the delivery of study data. Interacts with external partners for the transfer and troubleshooting of bioanalytical assays.

  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in chemistry, biology, or an allied area of study.
  • 2-4 years of industrial experience or academic research involving sample preparation from complex matrices and quantitative liquid-chromatography with or without mass-spectrometry.
  • Ph.D. level candidates will not be considered for this role.
  • This scientist will work in a laboratory environment and will be required to sit and stand in front of laboratory benches, computers, and instrumentation.
  • They will be required to lift and carry 4-liter bottles of solvent.
  • The scientist will be required to work with animal and human biological fluids and tissues.
  • They will work with new chemical entities whose pharmacological and toxicological effects are unknown and are under investigation.
  • This scientist is expected to maintain a flexible work schedule which will occasionally require evening and weekend work.
  • They may, on occasion, be asked to travel to our external partners and to scientific conferences.

  • Experience in developing procedures for the extraction of analytes from biological matrices.
  • Experience in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of liquid-chromatography systems.
  • Experience in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of triple-quadrupole mass spectrometers.
  • Experience with WATSON laboratory information management system.
  • Experience with electronic notebook documentation.
