Description:

The Department of Pathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a Research Specialist (Lab Manager) to join the laboratory of Dr. Nahed Ismail. This position will use cellular and molecular biology and immunology techniques to study host-microbial interactions. Specifically, this position will study innate immune signaling and host immune and metabolic responses during infection with intracellular bacterial pathogens that cause sepsis. In addition, this position will be involved in research studies related to COVID-19 diagnostics and identification of biomarkers of immunity or immunopathology during infection with SARS-COV2.

Duties:

Position emphasis in the areas of basic and translational research will include:

  • Work with Principle Investigator to design and develop research project.
  • Conduct research experiments, analyze data and information, evaluate and report findings.
  • Work with the Principal investigator to mentor research students and staff.
  • Order, prepare and maintain reagent and biological stocks.
  • Report equipment problems and assist with setting up new equipment.
  • Test, optimize and troubleshoot new and existing methods and techniques.
  • Maintain digital and hard copy records of experimental history, protocols and results.
  • Prepare scientific results for publication in peer-reviewed journals and/or grants applications.
  • Communicate results at internal and external scientific conferences.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in microbiology, molecular, biochemistry or related field required, M.SC or Ph.D. preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic experimental design and statistics.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in basic molecular biology techniques (PCR, western blotting, microarray, RNA seq), immunology (flow cytometry), mammalian cell culture, animal experimentation, microscopy.
  • Computer proficiency: MS word/excel/power point.
  • Experience in bioinformatics and genomics is a plus.
