Academic Professional Track (Non-Tenure): Visiting Assistant Professor
The Department of Marine and Coastal Environmental Science at Texas A&M University at Galveston invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track position with a 9-month academic appointment for the fall and spring semesters beginning September 1, 2021. Renewal beyond the first year will be contingent upon successful performance and funding availability. Applicants will be considered for the faculty title of Visiting Assistant Professor.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach ~6 required/elective courses in geological marine science and general oceanography during an academic year (e.g., Oceanography, Field Methods in Marine Sciences, Historical Geology, Sedimentary Geology, Geomorphology, and Coastal Processes). Some curriculum and teaching materials will be provided to the candidate to modify, or deliver, as they deem appropriate. This is predominantly an undergraduate teaching position, requiring a strong commitment to teaching excellence and constructive mentoring to promote student success. In addition, modest service to the University and Department is also anticipated. The successful candidate should be able to work in a multidisciplinary department that includes faculty with expertise in the natural physical sciences (geological, chemical and physical marine science) and social sciences (coastal zone management and policy).
Texas A&M University at Galveston is an ocean-oriented branch campus of Texas A&M University which educates nearly 2,300 undergraduate and graduate students in a unique blend of marine and maritime programs, including majors in science, business, engineering, liberal arts, and transportation. It is the primary component that fulfills the sea-grant portion of Texas A&M’s land-, sea-, space-grant mission and has nearly $10 million annually in research expenditures. Texas A&M-Galveston is also home to the Texas A&M Maritime Academy, one of seven in the U.S. and the only academy integrated into a Tier 1 academic institution, which trains over 300 cadets annually for maritime service and employment around the world. We are interested in candidates with potential for excellence in teaching, or evidence of teaching excellence. An earned Master’s degree in marine science, oceanography, geology, earth science, environmental science, physical geography, or related fields is required, while a Ph.D. degree is strongly preferred. For applicants with no Ph.D. degree, significant instructional experience in one or more of these fields is required.
