Founded in 1913 and headquartered in Duarte, California, City of Hope is a remarkable non-profit institution, where compassion and advanced care go hand-in-hand with excellence in clinical and scientific research. City of Hope is a National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of the nation's leading cancer centers that develops and institutes standards of care for cancer treatment.

Position Summary

The Beckman Research Institute seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Molecular Medicine in the lab of Dr. Robert Hickey.

The position will have an emphasis on Small Molecule Synthesis (MW 300-600) rather than Natural Products Synthesis (very limited chiral centers) primarily in a scale of 0.1 to 10 gram amounts. Products are intended to probe binding to a specific site on a protein surface, generating data ultimately leading to the design of a therapeutic. Isosteric substitutions of side chains and functional groups will be used to generate families of probes then evaluated for changes in relative binding affinity, specificity, and biological activity.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with a variety of synthetic procedures, including air- and water- sensitive synthesis without a glove box, as well as techniques for purification and characterization of the products. The lab possesses UV/Vis spectrometers, a Bio-Rad FPLC, and an Agilent 1200 series HPLC; the last set up for analytical and semi-preparative separation. Core facilities on campus provide access to NMR and Mass Spectrometry instrumentation. Candidate should be able to interpret NMR and MS data to unambiguously assign product structures.

Familiarity with the operation of NMR and MS instrumentation is considered a plus. Training is available to acquire such operational skills if necessary. The successful candidate will be provided with several leads and proposed syntheses and will be expected to expand upon these. Knowledge of Chimera and Autodock Vina visualization and docking programs (or their equivalent) is highly recommended, as these have been used to generate current leads, but may be readily acquired. Ability to communicate and explain results to the non-chemist scientific community a must.

Qualifications
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
A Ph.D. degree in chemistry or a related discipline is required.

Additional Information:

About Dr. Hickey: Robert Hickey, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Medicine . Dr, Hickey and his team are leading efforts in biomarker discovery and drug development with a focus on novel cancer related biomarkers and their potential mechanistic role in the progression of cancer.

City of Hope is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, status as a protected veteran, or status as a qualified individual with disability.
