The Backlund lab at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking candidates for postdoctoral research positions. The Backlund lab (https://backlundlab.scs.illinois.edu/) is a new research group at UIUC in the Department of Chemistry. Professor Backlund is also a member of the Illinois Quantum Information Science and Technology Center (IQUIST).

Research interests in the lab are centered on applied quantum sensing and advanced microscopy methods. One thrust of the lab involves using quantum defects in diamond to sense molecular scale phenomena in targets relevant to biophysics and soft condensed matter. Another thrust casts single-molecule fluorescence microscopy as a quantum estimation task in order to establish and saturate metrological limits inherent to these important techniques.

Interested candidates should email Prof. Backlund directly at mikaelb@illinois.edu.

A PhD in Physical Chemistry, Physics, or a related field is required.
