The Person: The NCI is seeking an innovative leader to serve as the Director for the Division of
Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS). The position serves as the Director for the
Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) and is in the Office of the
Director (OD), National Cancer Institute (NCI) and reports directly to the NCI Director. The
mission of the DCCPS is to provide national and international leadership in supporting research
in surveillance, epidemiology, health services, behavioral science, and cancer survivorship with
the goal of reducing the burden of cancer in America. The Division plays a central role within
the Federal government as a source of expertise and evidence on issues such as cancer trends, the
quality of cancer care, the economic burden of cancer, geographic information systems,
statistical methods, communication science, tobacco control, and implementation science.

The Director, DCCPS provides scientific expertise and overall scientific administration to the
operations and support of the research and operations of the DCCPS. The Director exercises
scientific and administrative management of an integrated program of the highest quality
epidemiological, behavioral, social, health services, and surveillance cancer research. DCCPS funded
research aims to understand the causes and distribution of cancer in populations, support
the development and delivery of effective cancer control interventions, and monitor and explain
health disparities across all segments of the population. Central to these activities are the
processes of data aggregation, evidence synthesis, modeling and decision making that aids in
evaluating what has been learned, identifying new priorities and strategies, collaborating with
other agencies, and effectively applying research discoveries to reduce the cancer burden.
S/he has responsibility for: (1) scientific planning, resource, partnership and management of
operational administration for the division; (2) oversight of all the division’s grants and
cooperative agreement research activities amounting to over $400 million annually; and (3)
working with and advising senior leadership on the development and implementation of long range
strategic, scientific, facility and business plans for the division.
The Director, DCCPS oversees a budget of approximately $150 million and a staff of
approximately 150 scientific and administrative staff; sets the scientific priorities, makes
program decisions, and develops policy; fosters emerging topics in cancer control research that
benefits the nation, and oversees the activities of 6 branches that are responsible for:
- applying behavior and social sciences research to cancer prevention and control,
- supporting research in human populations to understand determinants of cancer occurrence and outcomes and translating findings to clinical and public health interventions,
- studying cancer care, the factors influencing care, and the outcomes of care,
- improving the impact of cancer control and population science on the health and healthcare of the population, and fostering the rapid integration of research, practice, and
- providing a quantitative portrait of cancer and its determinants in a defined population, and
- enhancing the quality and length of survival of all persons diagnosed with cancer and to prevent, minimize, or manage adverse effects of cancer and its treatment.
These programs are implemented through extramural grants, cooperative agreements,
collaborative projects, and other activities.
Position Requirements: The successful candidate will have an M.D. or Ph.D. in a relevant
discipline and have extensive training and experience in cancer control and population sciences
research. The candidate must be able to lead a national and international integrated program of
the highest quality epidemiological, behavioral, social, health services, and surveillance cancer
research. The candidate must be an experienced scientist with a record of peer-reviewed
publications, outstanding performance, and recognized accomplishments in the field of cancer
control and population sciences. In addition, the candidate must be an experienced manager
responsible for supervising scientific and administrative staff, overseeing complex research
projects and/or grants and facilitating collaborations and partnerships within the cancer and/or
public health research community. Of special importance include having a scientific vision for
DCCPS, the skill to lead complex cancer control research programs, the ability to develop and
implement cutting-edge cancer control research programs, and the knowledge of methods and
strategies for cancer control research, translation, and dissemination.
Salary/Benefits: This position will be filled under a Title 42 excepted service appointment.
Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate. A
