Director, Program for Human Genetics and Evolutionary Biology
University of Massachusetts Medical School

The University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) seeks a dynamic, internationally recognized human geneticist or evolutionary biologist to be the Director of a newly formed Program in Human Genetics and Evolutionary Biology. The broad objective of the program is to understand the role of genetic variation in human evolution, health and disease.  The Director will report to Terence Flotte, M.D., Dean of the School of Medicine, provost and executive deputy chancellor, to develop and grow the program in alignment with the strategic priorities of UMMS.

THE PROGRAM FOR HUMAN GENETICS AND EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY
The University of Massachusetts Medical School recently completed a new strategic plan, Impact 2025, in which the building of the program for Human Genetics and Evolutionary Biology Human and the creation of a Genetic Disease Modeling Core were identified as key priorities along with new and enhanced best-in-class infrastructure and specialized support services. A centerpiece of this commitment will be the construction of a state-of-the-art research facility on the UMMS campus that will house existing areas of world-class strength such as the Horae Gene Therapy Center, the Program in Molecular Medicine, neurobiology and neurotherapeutics, as well as new and emerging areas, including the Program in Human Genetics and Evolutionary Biology. UMMS will also create an Integrative Biomarker Core that will apply powerful new technologies and integrative analytics toward the identification of new biomarkers and novel point-of-care diagnostic devices

The inaugural Director of the Program in Human Genetics and Evolutionary Biology will establish a strategic vision for human genetics research, recruit faculty whose research aligns with that vision, foster research and education in human genetics and evolutionary biology, and oversee all staff and administration of the Program. The Director will have an opportunity to develop a broad portfolio of research activities including endeavors that are directly relevant to enhancing clinical investigations such as determining the genetic basis of Mendelian and complex diseases as well as more basic pursuits related to understanding the organization and function of the genome.  A wide range of animal models (e.g. flies, worms, mice) are accessible at UMMS, facilitating cross-species analyses.  Combined with the bioinformatics resources at UMMS, this provides an opening to use genetics to interrogate and quantify the principles of genetic control of complex phenotypes of cells and organisms.

THE POSITION
The Director of the Program of Human Genetics and Evolutionary Biology oversees all aspects of the program, promoting innovation, collegiality, collaboration, teaching, and cutting-edge research while making administrative decisions within the established operating philosophy, goals, and objectives of UMMS. The Director will build an impressive program through the recruitment of high-quality faculty in collaboration with senior leadership, assuring the highest quality of academic research and achievement. The Director will grow NIH-funded research within the program and strengthen ties across the research communities at UMMS.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D., M.D. or M.D/Ph.D. and be highly accomplished investigators They will have a record of excellence in peer-reviewed publication; an outstanding record of extramurally funded research; the qualities to be an effective institutional leader; and the proven ability to be an advocate for programmatic initiatives within their home institution and throughout the broader academic community. Candidates must have a record of fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels of their institution among faculty, students, and staff.
