The Outpatient Clinical Nurse in the Gastrointestinal Center at MD Anderson Cancer Center coordinates and implements patient care across the continuum of care. They are accountable and responsible for providing quality, evidence-based patient care through the appropriate use of resources in collaboration with the inter-professional team, and acts as a patient and family advocate to uphold patient rights.

Ideal candidate will have at least 18 months of recent RN experience.
KEY FUNCTIONS
  • Accountable for the management and provision of patient care in assigned area.
  • Assesses patient's needs for nursing care and other services, using clinical skills and visual, aural and analytical abilities.
  • Collaborates with physicians, other services, patient and patient's family to plan care and evaluate outcomes.
  • Integrates knowledge of age-specific care needs, principles of oncology practice, institutional goals and standards and current professional practice standards in providing care for patients.
  • Improves practice by integrating results and theories of research studies.
  • Participates in data collection for current studies.
  • Demonstrates clinical competency and compassion in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies.
  • Assures continuity of care through appropriate discharge planning, patient education and coordination of services.
  • Acts as a patient and family advocate to uphold patient rights.
  • Organizes and prioritizes work of patient care team; trains, coaches and assists team members to ensure optimum patient care and efficient use of resources.


EDUCATION

Required: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing. .

EXPERIENCE

All clinical nurses with less than one year of registered nurse (RN) work experience will be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program. Foreign trained nurses who have not practiced nursing as an RN in the United States for at least one year will also be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program. Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN).

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. Preferred: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
