Search for Director, Division of Hematology and Oncology

University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine

The Department of Medicine (DOM) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine welcomes applications and nominations for their next Director of the Division of Hematology and Oncology. Among the nation’s leading academic health sciences centers and #25 in cancer care, UAB is committed to further elevating its cancer care and research in national prominence. The Division is a core component of a top-twenty department of internal medicine. It is also integral to the NCI designated O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, established in 1971 and continuously funded for 48 years.

Over the past six years, the Division has more than doubled its number of faculty, developed nationally recognized research programs, and has enhanced and grown its fellowships. Division faculty have focused strengths in adult hematology and oncology, basic sciences, experimental therapeutics, and outcomes research—particularly in underrepresented communities. In January 2020, Dr. Barry Sleckman assumed the role of Director of the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and has already had transformative impact. The University has committed to a new clinical cancer facility. Taken together, these conditions are ideal for the next Director of Hematology and Oncology to further elevate the Division.

The Division is central to the Department of Medicine, the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the UAB Cancer Service Line, where the new Division Director will serve on the Governance Committee, a small group of cancer-focused clinical and hospital leaders that make all of the strategic decisions around the different cancer missions of the cancer service line. The new Division Director will be a visionary, accomplished, leader with demonstrated accomplishments in research relevant to adult oncology. The Director is responsible for all clinical, academic, and administrative activities of the Division and must be comfortable setting strategy and building a culture of excellence across all missions. Highly developed skills in navigating a complex, matrixed environment are essential. To be successful, the Director must work collaboratively across the diverse internal organizations within the UAB school of medicine and UAB health system, in addition to advancing the Division’s mission with community providers and leaders, donors, and other external entities.

The Director must foster an environment that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion as central to academic productivity and meeting the clinical service needs of the UAB Cancer Service Line and the UAB health system. To do so, the Director must be passionate about mentoring and developing faculty and fellows, and able to grow the Division through strategic recruitment to expand the areas of oncology, hematology, and bone marrow transplantation, with these values front of mind.

UAB has engaged Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in the search. All nominations and applications should be sent in confidence to: Philip Jaeger (pjaeger@imsearch.com) or Randi Alberry (ralberry@imsearch.com). Electronic submission strongly recommended at www.imsearch.com/7669
