Professorship (W3) for geosciences with a focus on ocean dynamics in a changing climate
As a University of Excellence, Universität Hamburg is one of the strongest research universities in Germany. As a flagship university in the greater Hamburg region, it nurtures innovative, cooperative contacts to partners within and outside academia. It also provides and promotes sustainable education, knowledge, and knowledge exchange locally, nationally, and internationally.
The Department of Earth System Sciences in the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences invites applications for a
PROFESSORSHIP (W3) FOR GEOSCIENCES WITH A FOCUS OND OCEAN DYNAMICS IN A CHANGING CLIMATE
commencing as soon as possible, ref. no. 2347/W3
We expect the successful candidate to teach and conduct basic research with a focus on the dynamics of the ocean in a changing climate, preferably using methods of sea-going oceanography. Physically oriented research topics, especially in the open ocean, may include for example: ocean-atmosphere interaction, the ocean as a heat reservoir, large-scale ocean circulation, the role of waves and eddies, and ocean biogeochemistry in physical context, including the respective role of internal variability and measurement uncertainties.
We expect applicants to have an outstanding research record and extensive experience in the conception and implementation of research projects (if possible, based on your own measurement campaigns). Applicants’ research concept must include a description of their own research perspectives in the field of process-oriented sea-going physical oceanography.
Currently, the German Research Fleet Coordination Centre is overseen by a professor in the Department of Earth System Sciences. In the long term, it is conceivable that the advertised professorship assumes leadership. Applicants are asked to comment on their contribution to the future of the Coordination Centre.
The successful candidate is also expected to teach in the Bachelor of Science in Geophysics/Oceanography and the Master of Science in Ocean and Climate Physics and Master of Science in Integrated Climate System Sciences programs that follow.
The professorship is integrated into the Cluster of Excellence Climate, Climatic Change, and Society (CLICCS) and the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) at Universität Hamburg. We expect the successful candidate to work on CEN’s discipline-based and interdisciplinary research projects as well as with other research groups at the faculty, in the department, and in interdisciplinary projects at Universität Hamburg. Thanks to the incorporation of the professorship in KlimaCampus Hamburg, the successful candidate can cooperate with the participating institutions (including the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Centre for Material and Coastal Research, and the German Climate Computing Centre) and can draw upon the expertise of the institutions for hydrography, maritime meteorology, and fisheries research located in the Hamburg region.
The successful candidate is finally expected to participate in the core research area Climate, Earth and Environment.
Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.
Academic qualifications and additional requirements as specified in Section 15 HmbHG.
Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects. The University places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests that applicants provide details of their teaching experience and objectives.
Non-German-speaking post holders are expected to acquire the language skills necessary to teach in German (Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) within two years of commencing employment.
Following hearings to evaluate knowledge and expertise, management and human resources skills will be assessed by an assessment center.
In accordance with Section 14 subsection 3 sentence 3 HmbHG, Universität Hamburg seeks to increase the proportion of women in teaching and research and encourages female academics to apply.
Suitable disabled candidates or applicants with equivalent status with comparable qualifications, abilities, and experience receive preference in the application process.

The application deadline is 17. December 2020. Please submit your application with your CV, list of publications, teaching experience, successful external funding record, copies of certification and documents, three representative publications, teaching and research plans, additional evidence of skills and experience, such as presentations, posters, significant roles held in organizations, etc. where available, and the reference number 2347/W3, preferably by email in a single PDF file, to Bewerbungen@uni-hamburg.de or per post to:
