The Neuro-Oncology department provides state-of-the-art treatment for patients with cancers of the brain and nervous system. Physicians in the department also provide expert care for patients that endure neurologic complications from cancer or cancer therapies. We care for more than 500 new patients with brain tumors each year.

KEY FUNCTIONS

1. Generally aid and support the PI in all their research and laboratory efforts. Conducts research experiments and research projects in scientific fields under the supervision of faculty, educational or classified research staff.

2. Lab Studies; Standard molecular and cellular biology techniques and tissue culture.

* Processes and stores biospecimens for large international and institutional studies. Reports to Project Manager any problems found and suggestions for improvement. Asks questions appropriately when unsure.

* Animal Studies; Performing and assisting in animal experiments (mouse, breeding, weening, bleeding, tissue harvesting, injections, downstream processing and analysis). Performs animal maintenance (safety protocols and standards, record keeping of animal inventory)

* Train new members of the laboratory.

3. Prepares and maintains the inventory of lab supplies and general reagents.

4. Orders and organizes supplies for the laboratory. Performs regular monitoring of safety standards in the laboratory, maintains records of hazardous materials. Operates laboratory apparatus and equipment, utilizes equipment to carry out experiments.

* Collaborates or assists with supervisor and senior research staff with preparation of reports and grant requests.

5. Willingness to learn new techniques. Maintains high commitments to productivity, accuracy, security, and confidentiality.

6. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION
Required: Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

EXPERIENCE
Required: Three years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. With preferred degree, one year of required experience.

Preferred: Animal handling, molecular and cellular biology techniques.
