Primary Purpose
Idaho State University’s Department of Biological Sciences invites applications for a 9-month, full time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Microbiology to start August 2021. We seek a broadly trained applicant in the area of Applied and Environmental Microbiology with a research emphasis on how microbes are involved in industrial applications (agriculture, food security, medical applications) or environmental issues such as bioremediation, water, or the interactions between ecosystems and human health. This position will support the Department’s new research theme focused on ecosystem and human health. Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in molecular microbiological techniques (e.g., next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics) as well as traditional environmental microbiology techniques.

Key Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will teach courses in the areas of Cell and Molecular Biology, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, or other subjects that make appropriate contributions to the Departmental curriculum, based on the expertise of the successful applicant. They will develop a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and extramurally-funded research program that enhances and complements the research profile of the Department and University and will provide service to the Department, the University, their profession, and the surrounding Pocatello community.

Minimum Qualifications  

  • A completed doctorate in a life science field relevant to Microbiology.
  • Postdoctoral experience that complements other areas of active research in the Department.
  • A publication record indicative of the potential to establish and maintain a productive research program.
  • College-level teaching experience in the Microbiology or relevant fields, in the classroom or laboratory settings.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work collegially.
  • Experience working within a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment.
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting and working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research interests in how microbes are involved in industrial applications (such as agriculture, food security, medical applications) or environmental issues (such as bioremediation, water, or the interactions between ecosystems and human health).
  • Success in attracting extramural research funding.
  • Ability to forge interdisciplinary connections with other departments across campus or within the community
  • A background that enhances diversity of the Department’s faculty.
  • Expertise in molecular microbiological techniques such as next-generation sequencing or bioinformatics.
  • Expertise in traditional environmental or applied microbiological techniques.
