Career Opportunities in School of Civil Engineering

1. About Us

Sun Yat-sen University established the Department of Civil Engineering in 1931. During the 1950s when China was restructuring its higher education system, the Department of Civil Engineering was transferred to South China Institute of Technology.

In order to meet the urgent needs of national and local top science and technology talents, and to promote the integration of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medical sciences, and engineering, Sun Yat-sen University re-established the School of Civil Engineering (SCE) at the end of 2016. In 2018, the discipline of hydraulic engineering was integrated into SCE. Professor Wang Fuming, a Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was appointed as the first dean, opening a new chapter in Civil Engineering at Sun Yat-sen University.

After extensive and in-depth research, SCE has established the path and goals for its construction: Catering to the needs for the sustainable development of major strategic national infrastructure, new urbanization, South China Sea development, ecological and civilized development, and construction of the Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao Greater Bay Area. The development will integrate Civil Engineering with Water conservancy, Transportation, Marine science and other disciplines, focusing on the development of infrastructure operation and maintenance, underground space engineering, marine civil engineering, urban water research and management, water resources and ecology, riverine & coastal hydrodynamics, following the main stream of disaster prevention and control for the coupled water-soil(rock)-structure systems. We are striving to build a world-class “big civil engineering” discipline with Chinese characteristics, fostering technical ability, political integrity, leadership, and patriotism in students.

SCE now has more than 80 faculty members and staff, including 13 professors, 33 associate professors and 8 assistant professors. The full-time faculty members include one Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one chief scientist of the National Basic Research Program of China, one recipient of The National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, one national cultivated talent of 10 Top Talents Program of Guangdong Province, three recipients of the Youth Recruitment Program of Global Experts, and two candidates of the Special Support Plan for Talents in Guangdong Province.

SCE has established a complete training system for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students. Since the establishment of SCE, more than 40 professors and associate professors joined Sun Yat-sen University under the “Hundred Talents Program”. Currently, there are 495 undergraduate students and 218 master's and doctoral students in SCE.

In recent years, within the guiding ideology of “Three Orientations”, i.e. oriented toward academic frontiers, oriented toward the country’s major strategic needs, oriented toward national and regional economic and social development, SCE has actively participated in the development of Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Zhuhai). There are several provincial research centers in SCE, such as Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory for Marine Civil Engineering, Guangdong Provincial Research Center for Underground Development Engineering Technology, Guangdong Provincial Research Center on Engineering Technology for Major Infrastructure Safety, South China Water Safety Control Engineering Technology Research Center, BeSTDR Infrastructure Hospital and other research centers. The building of SCE with 59,000 square meter being constructed will provide excellent environment for study and research.

2. Disciplines

The School of Civil Engineering sincerely welcomes top talents to join one of our six research groups.

Infrastructure operation and maintenance

The safe operation of major infrastructure is of particular importance for national economy, social development and national defense security. The research group of “Infrastructure operation and maintenance” mainly focuses on the performance of major infrastructure, including transportation, energy, municipal facilities, water, and marine industries, in which faculties carry out fundamental technological research to understand the water-soil (rock)-structure coupling mechanism, the implementation of intelligent and health monitoring, the long-term performance evaluation, the disaster evolution mechanism, and issues related to disaster prevention, control, and early warning. Based on big data analytics, we will propose strategies and methods for intelligent maintenance of major infrastructure to achieve the goal of safe engineering operations.

Underground space engineering

Utilization of underground space is an inevitable choice for China's new urbanization and development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area to solve urban problems, such as land restrictions and urban flooding. It suits urgent needs of strategic projects such as the “Belt and Road Initiative” and the plan for increasing the maritime power. The research group of "Underground Space Engineering" mainly investigates the following key scientific issues: water-soil (rock)-foundation-structure interaction, geotechnical or structural durability, waterproof and vibration barrier for underground engineering, and theory of resilient geotechnical structures. Faculty members conduct research on lifelines and trenchless technology, geological prediction and geohazard detection, disaster prevention and control for underground engineering, reinforcement, repair and emergency response, resilient underground construction techniques, which essentially provide theoretical and technical support for the sustainable development of underground space, achieving the goal of green, safe and durable engineering.

Marine civil engineering

According to the national strategy of strengthening the maritime power, construction of the Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and Greater Bay Area, regional economic and social development and personnel training needs, the research group of "marine civil engineering" will focus on the coupled water-soil (rock)-structure systems, with special emphasis on civil engineering materials, marine engineering mechanics, marine structural engineering, marine geotechnical engineering, estuary coast and island reef engineering, marine engineering disaster prevention and mitigation, marine engineering reliability and risk assessment, and advanced experimental technology for marine engineering. In the short term, extensive research efforts will be put on the construction and maintenance of offshore wind power, the construction and protection of coastal, offshore, and island reef, and the underground space development of coastal city and island reef.

Urban water research and management

Urban water security is the foundation for the sustainable development of human society. In the context of global climate change and rapid urbanization, China has promoted the construction of “sponge city” and “smart water system”, providing a good opportunity for urban water research. The research group of “Urban water research and management” mainly aims to investigate the fundamental theories and key technologies in urban hydrological system and water resources management, urban flood control and disaster reduction, sponge city and low impact development (LID), utilization and protection of urban water resources, planning and management of urban water, environmental protection and restoration of urban water bodies, water-related big data and smart cities, operation and comprehensive management of urban water supply and drainage, urban waterlogging control building maintenance material and structure, and urban water pollution control engineering . The group focuses on international cutting-edge research topics in urban water issues, meeting the country's major needs. The regional hydrological characteristics of the tropical and subtropical megacities, and the interdisciplinary research of urban flood prevention and mitigation, and water security will be particularly investigated.

Water resources and ecology

Water resource is one of the three strategic resources of the country, and the security of water resource has become extremely important for economic and social development. Focusing on the issue of water resources security in a changing environment, the research group of “Water resources and water ecology” focuses on water vapor cycle, hydrological processes, water and waste material migration in rivers and lakes, water resource vulnerability assessment, water ecological environment evolution and health assessment, multi-objective coordinated allocation of water resources, intelligent scheduling and regulation of water resources and water ecological environment, water system connectivity engineering, water resources security project, water ecological environment protection and restoration projects. We will propose optimal regulation and control strategies for water resources, water ecology and water environment that are highly related to the safety of all citizens and the government.

Riverine & Coastal Hydrodynamics

The Pearl River Delta (PRD) is the world’s largest urban area by size and population. The physical environment of the PRD is composed of diverse types of river networks, wetlands, marshes, estuaries and bays. Freshwater, sediment, and nutrients are delivered to the ocean in such a complex system, presenting intriguing hydrologic and hydrodynamic problem of fluid and transport. The social and economic development of PRD is putting the fresh water resources under pressure. In addition, sea level rise, saltwater intrusion, flooding, and storm surges are increasingly threatening water resources in PRD. Water resource management for such densely populated and fast developing area is critical and challenging. The research group of “Riverine & Coastal Hydrodynamics” develops numerical models, novel datasets, and innovative tools, with a focus on both scientific advances in riverine & coastal hydrodynamic and social requirements of water resources for growing coastal population.
