Alder Hey Children’s Hospital is one of Europe’s biggest and busiest children’s hospitals caring for over 330,000 children, young people and their families every year. A new state-of-the-art hospital – Alder Hey in the Park – and a new research, innovation and education centre – the Institute in the Park – were opened in 2015, bringing together excellent care, technology and design to provide the best possible healing environment for children and their families. Alder Hey has a thriving research portfolio, with strengths in pharmacology, infection, inflammation and oncology, and delivered in partnership with a number of NHS, academic and commercial partners. Alder Hey’s contributions to public health, cutting-edge research and teaching are pivotal to its developing reputation as one of the world’s leaders in children’s healthcare and research.

Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is now seeking to appoint a Director for Research Development and Innovation. Working closely with the other Executive Directors, this newly created post will be accountable to the Chief Executive Officer and report to the Medical Director, and will play a leading role in the development and delivery of an ambitious research and innovation strategy, building upon existing strengths to firmly establish Alder Hey as a world-leading centre of excellence in research and innovation in children’s healthcare.

The successful candidate will be an established researcher or innovator in a relevant field, with a track record of personal achievement, together with extensive strategic leadership experience. They will demonstrate an understanding of challenges to both innovation and research with demonstrated experience of meeting those challenges, preferable in both sectors.  They will have excellent communication skills and proven experience of engaging effectively with a complexity of stakeholders.
